[Following is a volunteer review of "E M P Honeymoon" by Dorothy May Mercer.]
In the midst of their honeymoon in Honduras, Kelly and Tom Turbulo stumble upon an unexpected turn of events when Kelly uncovers a startling revelation in the back of a seemingly innocent tourist spot. Fearing for her safety, Kelly reaches out to her brother, Senator Mike McBride, hoping for assistance. As the situation escalates and it becomes evident that traditional channels can't offer a solution, Mike turns to his acquaintance at the CIA, Assistant Director Joseph Rench, intensifying the concerns.
The involvement of a foreign government adds a layer of complexity to the plot, making the unfolding events both alarming and realistically plausible. The characters, portrayed as down-to-earth individuals, inject a relatable touch into the narrative. Mercer skillfully incorporates everyday moments, like a visitor coping with the sweltering Honduran heat, enhancing the authenticity of the storytelling. Smooth transitions marked by sub-headings in the chapters contribute to clarity, preventing confusion about the ongoing events.
The novel's strengths outweigh its minor drawbacks. While the repetition of the book's title and author's name at the beginning of each chapter may feel excessive, it serves the purpose of reinforcing key details for the reader.
This novel caters to readers intrigued by nuclear power and energy, providing a realistic exploration of these themes. While not explicitly containing profanity or explicit content, the complexity of the subject matter may make it more suitable for adult readers who can grasp the intricate explanations. The inclusion of explanations for challenging concepts at the end of the book serves as a helpful guide for readers seeking a deeper understanding.
I rate this novel 5 out of 5 stars, as it strikes a balance by conveying the seriousness of the nuclear issue without overwhelming the reader with technical details. The inclusion of photos early in the book enhances the visual context, adding intrigue to the narrative. The lack of errors observed indicates a high level of professionalism in the editing process, contributing to an engaging and well-presented reading experience. I found nothing to dislike about the book.
