Wrong Turn, Right Guy, previously titled Falling off the Career Ladder, by Haylie B. Fox is advertised as a Romantic Comedy, set mostly in Italy. First off, I want to start off saying that this is this author’s first novel, and you can most certainly tell.
This “romantic comedy” is more like a drama following a workaholic attorney, Teresa “Tessa” Vadney on her trip to Italy for her best friend’s wedding; but can she cope with being away from her job? Will she find life and love in Italy worth leaving the work force behind?
This is honestly a badly written journey filled with more mishaps, angst, and ridiculousness than happy feelings. The author goes more into detail about the Italian architecture than she does describing the characters or relevant circumstances. I feel that there was so much unneeded information written in this book, we probably could have done without the entire second chapter; Mr. Abbott isn’t mentioned again until the end of the book, and by then who is going to really remember she found a stray dog?
I felt terrible for the main characters mother. She could never seem to be able to anything right by Teresa. Any little thing she tried to do or say, got her berated by Teresa. Quite honestly, Teresa and this book got on my nerves rather quickly; Teresa never wanted to take responsibility, blaming everything on everyone else or her job, she reminded me a lot of a child. By chapter five or six, I was over reading about how her life/trip wasn’t fair and everything being a disaster.
Finally, in chapter seven we meet some more “interesting” characters, two to be exact. Friends, Alex and Luca, who come to the rescue when yet another thing goes wrong on this Grand Trip to Italy. Not paying attention to where she was driving, Teresa takes a Wrong Turn and when she stops the car, the battery dies, forcing her and her mother to walk to the nearest house looking for help; at least they find it. Alex helps Teresa and her mother make it back for the wedding, but by the end of the wedding chapters (I believe chapter eight or nine) I was so sick of their supposed rescuer. You could tell there was something off about this guy, his behavior was just not that of a hero. And really, I thought Luca was gay…it is all in the way I imagine him speaking and the way he acts I suppose.
Even though Teresa’s trip doesn’t go as planned, she decides to stay in Italy a while longer. I was very happy to read this, she was doing something outside her comfort zone and that could benefit her, even though you and I both know she wouldn’t be able to cope and everything else would be a disaster she could blame on other people.
After her stay, I thought the book ended hastily (even though I didn’t enjoy it). The author appeared to resolve everything just so she could end the book without writing a sequel, which I slightly thank her for, but everything from about chapter 14/15 was way, way too rushed.
It honestly took me a lot longer to read this book than I would have liked, I just couldn’t get into it. It is definitely not a book for me. I rated this book 1 out of 4 stars. I have read plenty of romantic comedies over the years, and believe me, this is not one. I cannot tell you to whom I would recommend this book. Maybe if you’re into “romantic” dramas, or you don’t need much detail to be into reading certain books.
