Janet McNulty starts off her latest Sci-Fi series with a bang with Solaris Seethes. As the first of four books, this book sets the scene for the upcoming space adventure.

Set on the far off planet of Lanyr, the story centers around the main character of Rynah. As she is betrayed by the very person she thought she could trust, her way of life rapidly disintegrates as her home planet starts to be fall apart. Forced to flee Lanyr, Rynah finds unexpected help in an ancient spaceship, Solaris, built by her grandfather and surprisingly enmeshed with secrets and history. A history that she has stubbornly refused to accept in the past, and which she now must face in order to save her planet and all she holds dear.

Consulting the past myths and legends of her people, Rynah discovers history eerily repeating itself. According to legend she must recruit a team of four very diverse people to help her in her mission and defeat the rebel movement responsible for her planet’s destruction. While at first she is frustrated with her team of recruits, she soon learns not all is what meets the eye as they start to show hidden strengths and force her to question her own beliefs.

Solaris Seethes is an easy book to become entangled in. The reader can see similarities to Stanley Kubrick’s cult film, 2001: Space Odyssey, with the space ship who has human characteristics, emotions and flaws, and the underlying question of is it to be trusted? One can also not help but draw similarities with the more recent film of Guardians of the Galaxy with its thrown together band of misfits who need to learn to work as a team in order to save the world.

While this book is well written, it does get bogged down in the descriptions of other worlds, which tends to lean towards just lists of colours. This halts the otherwise good flow of the plot. Also, as the characters evolved, I would have liked to have seen them develop more individually and become more three-dimensional. However this may happen more in the second book.

The plot did become somewhat predictable, especially in regards to the characters reactions and interactions amongst themselves, which is why it was such a pleasant surprise when there was a substantial unforeseen twist at the end. This rekindled my interest and I am now eager to read the sequel.

I rate Solaris Seethes by Janet McNulty 3 out of 4 stars. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Sci-Fi, space mystery and adventure. An enjoyable read.
