I picked Daniel Friedmann’s Roadmap to the End of Days, not because it had an interesting subtitle (Demystifying Biblical Eschatology To Explain The Past, The Secret To The Apocalypse And The End Of The World), but because the concept of the end of days was something I had thought about before. In all honesty, everybody does think of the end of days. But I did not expect this book to be as dependent on the Biblical way of looking at things as it actually is. It is very well researched, but for those who are not familiar with the Bible, reading the book is not so peachy.
Because of this, I rate this book 2 out of 4 stars. It is based completely on my personal opinion, since I am not at all acquainted with the Biblical version of events. I was hoping to be enlightened about it in the book, but it did not make sense to me at all. Yet, let me elucidate on the positives and the negatives that I thought of when I read the book.
Roadmap to the End of Days begins with a compelling analogy between a glass maze and history. The disparity and similarity in what different religions teach their followers are explained in a simple, beautiful manner. But how are they connected in time? How does each religion advocate what to do when time actually ends? The end of time or the “end of days” terrifies almost everyone. The author gives reasons and explanations as to why no amount of terror and prayers can stop the “end of days” from dawning, something that is highly relative when it comes to how we see it.
You might be frightened about the end of days that seems so far, yet so close. You might have asked the question “Why was I born?” a number of times in frustration. In this book, the author tries to explain the purpose that you are looking for. To achieve this, he lists down the seven Noahide laws, commandments that everyone should ideally follow. Rephrase, rename them, perhaps, but follow them. And there will be peace!
Friedmann also draws parallels between different points of time in history and forecasts the future; something that is equally assuring and terrifying. This, while giving a detailed explanation of Biblical references that leads you to at least try and understand how the “End of Days” actually pans out. It is difficult to understand the source of everything mentioned in the book.
What I liked about the book is that the author has collated numbers, figures, and facts to bring out an explanation for the dreaded “end of days”. What I did not like about the book is that it is full of the very same numbers and figures but those which I have no clue about and there is no explanation in the narrative itself, though there is an appendix. But that makes it difficult to go back and forth every time. I wouldn’t saying anything for once a page, even, but there are about 8-10 links in every page.
I’m sure other people, those who have knowledge about the Biblical interpretation of events, would absolutely love Roadmap to the End of Days. And people like me, who have no clue, would not like to read it.
