Janet McNulty. Solaris Seethes. MMP Publishing, 485 pages.
Solaris Seethes is a science fiction/fantasy genre. It is set in a wide universe with multiple planets. The main character Rynah is thrown into a fight for her life and the universes survival when someone she loves betrays her. I suspect this is written for a young adult audience although the backtracking and use of parenthesis could be confusing for the younger readers. I believe the author is trying to set up a wide array of universes for the reader to get lost in but in the end, leaves you feeling like you never left your home planet.
The book delves into the mythology and perceptions each person could make of them. The main theme of the book revolves around a prophecy with six crystals. Up until now everyone has taken the prophecy as a fairy tale told to each child, but with Rynah’s betrayal you are thrown into the fight to retrieve the crystals before they fall into the wrong hands. With the help of a spacecraft, Solaris, you are drawn into a world that has a planet with plants that eat you, a planet of nothing but water, and pirates. Solaris was built by Rynah’s grandfather and has its’ own hilarious at times attitude towards who and what is going onboard the ship. Solaris teleports the 4 heroes that goes along with the prophecy from different times and places on Earth. Rynah with their help proceeds to try and decipher the prophecies to find the 6 crystals.
The book at times is an easy read, but then you are left with backtracking, parenthesis galore, and striving for more with the heroes. I feel like the author needed one or two more read throughs before publishing the book. The idea and feel of the series could be a hit, but my standards was never met on the need to keep reading and delving further into this world. Solaris is the saving grace of the book. The only reason I kept reading was to get to the quips and attitude of the ship. I wanted more knowledge on Solaris and not to mention the main characters but this was never delivered. Maybe in the books further on in the series more is detailed but I was not drawn into reading the second book. Not to mention the third or the fourth. The big problem I had with the whole read was the author wanted you to believe you were in outer space and within a science fiction realm. When in reality she used the same descriptions and wordings for plants, animals, and pretty much everything else within the book. To me this was a huge misstep especially when the narrator was meant to be Rynah and she is from another planet.
I rate this book 2 out of 4 stars. With a little work and a lot more description this book could have gotten a higher score, but in the end the lack of originality and the overuse of parenthesis definitely left me not interested in finishing this book.
