Has everyone been telling you what's good for your health, but you are not really sure if they are telling the truth? If so, Health Tips, Myths, and Tricks: A Physician's Advice by Morton E. Tavel, MD, is the book for you.

A wide range of topics is covered in this book, separated into three sections: Tips, Myths, and Tricks. In "Tips", the author provides short, useful tidbits on how to improve your health, like what kind of to have and avoid. The "Myths" section covers the popular topics circulating on the street. from widely known issues such as genetically modified (GM) foods, to lesser known, topics that you never really realize were myths, like paper towels or blower?! Lastly, the "Tricks" section identifies and advises the reader the propaganda and false beliefs that exists in the health industry. Did you know "detoxifying" solutions on the market isn't a healthy thing to do?

There is often a barrier to reading non-fiction books, especially one that is based on scientific knowledge and written with scientific studies as supporting evidence. However, coming from a scientific background, I found that most topics were explained clearly in simple English, and is written in a manner that is attractive for readers of all educational background. With that said, some sections were a bit too "science-y", and might put the average reader off. One advice I would give is to have Google handy, just in case.

What I like about this book is that actual scientific studies were used to support the health claims addressed in this book. unlike other people selling "snake oil" solutions supported by the power of imagination. With his wealth of experience in the medical profession, the author is able to give his own opinion on the studies, and point out any useful (or lack of) criticism with health claims or health studies. Also, you won't have to read the whole book to understand the main idea. Each health claim is separated into their own chapter, and you can skip to that section if you are interested in a particular topic.

A minor criticism I would give is that some of the chapters were way too scientific. While the details of the health studies were described very well, I found it a bit difficult to follow, especially when it is related to a field I am not familiar in.

I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars.

This book is great to read if you are unsure about some of the health claims floating around. You will be able to get an idea of what's good for you, and the things that you should avoid in your goal of becoming a health conscious person.
