Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies

[Following is a volunteer review of "We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies" by Matthew Tysz.]
There's a kind of life that fits the description of being miserable. I thought I knew how hard life can get until I read this book. I couldn't just begin to imagine the animalistic lives of Galen Bray and the other inhabitants of The Land of the Princes. In We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz, this place was a place of misery where suffering abounded, and the worst of it was that you couldn't leave. However, Galen was fortunate enough to leave, but how?
Is there a place better than The Land of the Princes? Well, Voulhire was much praised for its rich economy, thriving inhabitants, and growing capitalism. But was that all there was to it? There was this place in Voulhire called Alcovia. This place was known for its mining of earth metals. A place with such rich resources is expected to be a thriving city with so much to offer. However, it turned out disappointing since it was filled with average-looking individuals who had seen days of hard work. That's a capitalist society for you; not everyone thrives as much as others do.
If there was something I appreciated about this book, it was its mystical nature. It started out with Galen's misery in The Land of the Princes and the promise of a better future. Then it moved to talking about Voulhire's history, economy, and politics. If it weren't for the presence of mages, strange places, and supernatural phenomena, this book's economic and political system could have passed as a non-fiction book about some parts of the real world.
As much as I enjoyed reading this book, I had one dislike. I found this book too stressful to understand at times. This is not a book to be read while relaxing, as it will not aid one's relaxation. The too many twists, innuendos, descriptions, and other explanations kept my brain functioning throughout the book, although sometimes I got tired of trying to understand where the story was heading, so I took a break. There was this powerful mage that everyone feared but still admired. His name was Meldorath. I would like to read more stories about him.
I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. It was exceptionally well-edited. As much as the book was complex, it kept me on my toes. This was so much so that even when the book's pace slowed down a bit, I didn't notice because I was pondering what had happened and what it would lead to. If you are a lover of sci-fi fiction, this book will keep you very intrigued.
