Something by Shelby Lamb is book one in a series about a high-school girl named Aubrey who goes into a used bookstore one day and buys a mysterious book called Something. Aubrey as she tries to get over her break-up with her 3-month boyfriend Nathan, and bullying from most everyone else, tries to overcome her feelings of self-hatred. She has few friends and comforts herself with thoughts of suicide and self-mutilation. As Aubrey delves deeper into her new book, she begins to hallucinate, and things start happening to those who have had contact with the book, leading down a sinister path… but could it really be real or are they all just imagining it?

The book touched on a great number of important themes such as mental health, bullying, suicide, self-mutilation, and sexually transmitted diseases, however, it only skimmed these topics and left the reader wanting some conclusion to them. This book could have gone a lot of ways on any of the topics, however, the main theme was the book Something and I felt like that got the least attention until the very end of the book when it all started to pull together in the last few pages of the book. More attention needed to be drawn to how the book insidiously came to be part of the other’s lives. The ending was the worst of all because it left the reader with no conclusion at all… it was missing an ending…

I would give this book a rating of 2 out of 4. I wouldn’t give it a one because there is some flow to the book, at the end where it is all pulled together quickly. If this had happened earlier and throughout the book, more smoothly I would have been able to give this book a rating of 3 and if there was a full ending to the book. Any book should have a clear ending even if it leads into another book to keep the reader from feeling cheated. I felt cheated and angry when I got to the end.

There were a few obvious typos one was “chest” when it should have been Chess and the other was “Ambilify” for one of the medications when it should have been “Abilify”, but otherwise it was clear from typos and had sound structure. It was hard to figure out, the setting with the descriptors, whether it was teenagers, or young adults in college when I read the book the first time and to what audience the book was directed.

Something is definitely a dark, morbid horror type themed book. It will have a very special audience, it is a very special book that does not reel back from subjects that are considered off-limits to some. It hits them head-on and flourishes in them and to that, it is an exciting read. It is fast-paced and shocks the reader at every turn, it just needs an ending.

I thought that was one of the more realistic aspects of the book. In a typical horror story the people instantly try to figure out what is wrong, discover the mystery, and so on. In Something they just brush if off and hope that if they ignore it will go away. I felt that was very lifelike.

Nice review, Maciarah2.

The ending was the only reason that I gave it an extra star even though I had been disappointed with the most of the story. I agree that this is for a certain audience. I said that it is for fans of horror comedies. The horror in the book came off too exaggerated and not scary at all. I had found it amusing.

Great Review! :D
