Raven’s Rise by Lincoln Cole is the first book in the World on Fire series. Written in the third person the story is a suspenseful sci-fi look at a world full of demons and hunted by the council in an effort to stop the spread of evil. It centers on Abigail Dressler, a hunter, who is a bit of a rebel in the eyes of the Council and an unsuspecting young man Haatim who becomes much more involved than he ever dreamed. Abigail harsh upbringing leads to her being mentored by The Reverend, a mysterious character whose many facets I hope, will be understood in the following books of the series. Abigail seems to like to bend the rules which does not make the Council happy and when she finds out that Haatim is actually the son of one of the council leaders it makes her decisions even more tenuous. With Haatim under her watch, Abigail investigates an old abandoned town which takes us deeper into her world and ends up setting the stage well for the next book.

The story caught my interest right from the prologue which plunges the reader into the world of demonic possession. The story moves along at a good pace with description that stirs the imagination and helps draw the reader into the story world. The characters are fleshed out well and you can relate to them on some level, even the evil ones. Suspense filled adventure and terrible discoveries lead the two protagonists to form a bond which I hope will deepen in the following books which I hope to read in the near future.

The book seemed to be professionally proofread and had a well written story line and likable, interesting characters this is a very good read. All of these points lead to a very interesting and enjoyable read. I give this book 3 out of 4 stars. I really enjoyed this book it was well written and well developed both in plot and characters. The only reason I did not give it four stars is because I felt a bit lost for the first third of the book. The author did not really explain what the council was and the back story to The Reverend was rather vague. My hope is that in the following books the explanations are more developed. I think I would have also liked to have had a little more of a closure in the Final chapter with a better lead in for the epilogue as it almost seemed to end too abruptly even for a serial book.

Mr. Cole mentions in the short biography that he was influenced by Isaac Asimov and Stephen King. Though not familiar with Asimov’s work I have definitely been a Stephan King fan for years. I can see some of the influences that may have helped Cole to shape Raven’s Peak into the story it is. I feel that Lincoln Cole could be a serious contender in the genre of supernatural as he grows as a writer.

For readers who enjoy horror stories or the supernatural Raven's Rise would be a great read. The writing is suspenseful and the story a little scary but Cole finds a good balance with his descriptive writing making the details enough to enhance the story and give the reader a good visual without becoming too gruesome or graphic. I would definitely recommend this book to friends.
