An interesting time travel love story that makes you want to read the entire story in a single sitting. You want to turn the pages to find out what happens next.
In brief, the story is about an abused woman who goes on a ride out in the dessert and meets with an Indian from a different time. The author is fond of Arizona and uses the landscape to weave a lovely story showing the plight of abused women as well as native Indians in the late 1800s. History has been researched well in order to depict the ways of life in the 1800.
Though it does require a suspension of belief, the story is a good read. The author has sketched believable characters showcasing regular and believable relationships. The prejudices against Indians and the plight faced by them during the early days of reservation are brought out very well. Also, the savage behaviour of both Indians and the early settlers is sketched well, which highlights the fact that people, irrespective of creed, are capable of the same savage or kind behaviour.
I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. The three stars are for the believable characters, the flow of the story, which flows seamlessly from one point to another. The start of the story, with the abuse of the main character, followed by her hope of a new life and subsequent travel into a different time is very well written. The disbelief Suzanne faces is very real and truly made me think that she was dreaming.
You are, however, caught up with the way Suzanne copes with being in an ancient time zone where many things that we take for granted in our lives were not even known. The love that Cody feels for Suzanne is wonderfully captured and makes us believe in a happily ever after, in fact almost wanting us to push the characters to take a decision soon if they will live in 1860 or in 2015!
Given that Suzanne is the one who is in the 21st century, she could have been stronger and less helpless in the abusive relationship, which she decides to leave only when she realizes that she is pregnant. Cody’s character has been well developed where his sense of honour as well his loneliness at not being completely accepted by both Indians and Whites has been very nicely written. He is shown as gentle and respectful towards all the women he comes across in his life.
I will definitely recommend reading this book for all those who enjoy a good romance with a bit of history thrown in.
