Solaris Seethes by Janet McNulty starts off with a bang and then keeps you engaged for the entire book. The genre of this book is science fiction and it is geared towards teens and young adults. The book is packed with action and adventure. It is also part of a series of 4 books.
One of the book’s main characters is a spaceship named Solaris stationed on the planet Lanyr. In the first chapter you are introduced to Rynah who works at a geo-lab as security protecting a crystal that keeps the electromagnetic field of her planet stable. Her fiancé is Klanor and he decides to steal the crystal not only betraying her but his whole planet. As her planet dies she is forced into her Grandfather’s old ship Solaris where Rynah learns that the ancient fairytales about 6 crystals her Grandfather believed in are actually true and her mission becomes to stop Klanor and find these crystals before he does. If she does not it will be doom to the whole universe.
The old prophecies state that there are four people that Rynah will need on her mission to help her. Solaris knows where they are and they come from planet Earth which is seen as a very primitive planet. The four characters come from different times in history, the present, and also the future. In the story we meet Alfric the Viking, Solon the scribe from Roman times, Brie from present day, and Tom a college student from 2099. This unlikely group becomes a team although not without some issues. Together they try to track the remaining crystals all while trying to outwit Klanor.
When I first started reading the book I was afraid I would get lost in the different planets and worlds that are introduced. That can sometimes happen in science fiction but that is not the case with this book. The author did a wonderful job painting believable worlds and creatures. She also wrote in a way that flowed and was not confusing in anyway. I loved the action and adventure in the book. It was just enough and left me wanting more and kept me engaged throughout the entire book. I honestly could not find any faults in this book. She did a wonderful job with characterization. I fell in love with all the characters I met along the way and hated the ones who opposed the main characters.
I give this book 4 out of 4. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the science fiction genre and I even think it would be a great book to read if you wanted to get outside your comfort zone to try something different. I loved how the plot flowed with a great amount of action that I did not want to put the book down. The only thing I disliked was I would have loved more detail and time on the different planets and adventures because they were so interesting.
