This is the first addictive instalment of a complex fantasy series. A chronology of multifaceted power plays, political games and outright war, all interwoven with magic!

This appears to be set in kingdoms not so dissimilar to ours, in an age of knights, honour and gross betrayal.

Great protagonists: Lord Eldus, Galen and King Wilhelm are set against a formidable set of powerful and intriguing enemies; Meldorath and the Riva Rohavi.

The plot cleverly centres around a young man, Galen, on a journey from a war torn country and introduces us, through his eyes, to Voulhire’s territories. A natural way to be educated about the different cultures, traditions and even dialects present there.

In place of technology they have some magical solutions, which have a robust, well reasoned logic and imaginative purpose. You could be fooled into thinking the very scientific sounding premise, of how magic operates, is derived from fact; not fantasy at all. As an adult it is nice to use escapism in an imaginary world, but that can still be somehow rationalised.

This is, in my opinion, an epic story and will not disappoint, be prepared for scenes of unseemly descriptions of strange magical violence. Thrilling if you like a little gory.

Once I was acquainted with this world I was left wanting more, I need some answers and a definitive ending after this has intrigued me so. I already want to read the next in the series, and with some urgency!

Fantastical but well reasoned, imaginative and absorbing. As I cannot fault the plot, characters, setting or find errors - it has to be 5 Stars from me!

Fantasy so often makes me feel childish and yet this author took me on a mentally stimulating journey into these interesting scenarios, you can lose yourself totally until reality comes calling again.
