The Stealer of Memories by Mois Benarroch is an interesting novel from the Sc-Fi/Fantasy section. Translated by William C, it is an intriguing idea for a great story that certainly got my attention at first. Published in 2016, the story focuses on memories and their nature. The unusual subject and my fascination with things that can't be fully explained certainly persuaded me to choose this book.
The book follows the story of a middle-aged man, who has the unique ability to see other people's memories. Written in first person, we get an exclusive view into the mind of a man who cannot differentiate between the memories of those around him and his own. The story follows the man as he shows the reader how a life in his shoes really looks. The story is split into five different sections, each focusing on something different, whether it was a day from his life, or what he remembers from the mess of memories that he has stolen in his life. We also learn about his childhood obsession, Raquel.
The story has an intriguing concept that I haven't stumbled across before when I used to read every book I could get my hands on and that is what initially drew me in. The actual story itself is very well thought out by Benarroch and has a very good story line, especially considering how short it actually is. Stories this short usually don't have a very complex story and usually tend to rush the events of what is happening quite a lot. While the story isn't a complex puzzle that takes a lot of observation to figure out, it isn't rushed too much, giving it a nice pace for all readers.
While the story itself is great, it is quite easy to see that the story was translate and gives the impression of not being edited after the translation. Especially in part one of the story, it gives an impression of the man having ADHD with how he seems to repeat thing and jump from topic to topic, only to come back to what he was saying two paragraphs before. While it is unique that the story is written in first person, it makes it somewhat confusing to follow the man's thought process. He seems to repeat the word 'yes' a lot, between nearly every sentence. While this might be just a translation issue, it makes the text confusing to read at times and doesn't flow like a story should.
Overall, I would rate this story 2 out of 4 stars. While the story is quite good and the only reason why i tried to overlook the confusing way it was written and finished it, the idea can't be the only good thing about the story. While the way it is written may be the fault of the translator, it still makes the book hard to read and often nearly made me quit.
