We are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies – Matthew Tysz
The first few chapters do their job well. They grab my attention, and I feel my shoulders tighten and the hairs on my neck stand. I was not disappointed.
I thoroughly enjoyed this first installment of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies and rate this 5.
An epic fantasy set in Voulhire, an Iron Age kingdom that prospered under King Wilhelm but the factions of religion, politics dark, and light magic are about to change that.
From the very beginning, the young man Galen running for the ship, desperate to escape the Land of the Princes for a new life already has me tense with expectation. He finds good fortune in Voulhire, inheriting a forge from his late long-lost uncle seems more than just chance and his uncle’s executor, Rowan appears to be the only person with any humor. An interesting change of pace is that Galen speaks in the first person in his chapters.
Evil, bloodshed, and Dark Magic seem to go hand in hand and the effects are chilling.
I would compare Matthew Tysz's writing to a world-class juggling act. He keeps balls in the air while diligently working magic on the settings; these are so detailed I can see the Riva Rohavi on the hillside in The Graylands, Galen’s uncle’s house, Hillport Castle, Lorcia’s Isle, and more. The settings are vivid and all the characters in those settings feel very real, yet I found the writing economical. Nothing can be more frustrating than an author going overboard with unnecessary details for no apparent reason. The same with his characters' developments; the main characters' personalities, backstories, secrets, and motives are built layer upon layer in their respective chapters, and I am drawn into their world, looking around and seeing what they see, wanting to warn and protect them. Then, the tension is introduced by the Riva Rohavi, who are cleverly introduced and appear almost harmless due to their rhythmic dancing movements in a zombie-like fashion to the detriment of the Mianora knights. Of course, Lord Maldorath, whose character even to the end, is a mystery with even more mysterious supporters.
I enjoyed that the chapters are numerous but not particularly long or drawn out. The constant change of setting and characters keeps the story charging ahead with diverse characters weaving in and out in a way that keeps them fresh, as it can be confusing when supposed, lesser characters make appearances. This book is extremely well written and edited too as I did not see even one typo or error. I happily rate this book 5
This book filled me with anxiety and dread at the drop of a pheasant feather.
I look forward to the next book.
