Solaris Seethes written by Janet McNulty takes place at a time that technology is advanced and dispersed throughout several planets around the universe. Several of those planets' very existence depends of crystals that balance out gravity, keeping the planet itself, intact. Rynah is faced with the destruction of her planet due to the removal of the crystal that her planet used to hold it together and power it's technology.
Rynah barely escapes with her life by finding a ship that previously belonged to her grandfather. This ship is unique due to it's inhabiting A.I. Named Solaris. Solaris controls most of the ships functions and carries herself with a personality that continually surprises Rynah. The ship, Solaris, was awaiting Rynah's arrival to enact plan she has had programmed into her to save the universe. Solaris decided to push forward with this mission now that she has Rynah aboard and safe.
The plan seems crazy, but she abducts four people from four different places on Earth within different time segments (one from the Viking era, our present day, a few decades in to our future, and one from Plato's time period). Solaris places them aboard her ship to save the galaxy from bad people who seek to destroy it. This story involves twists and turns that keep you guessing to it's conclusion with persistent pirates and planets with inhabitants of questionable nature.
Each person has to find their benefit on the journey along with overcoming their own weaknesses that torture them at every turn. Rynah finds herself trying to understand each of them smothering her own grief. All the while they are attempting to understand where they are and what's being asked of them in order for this mission to save the universe to succeed.
I liked this book because the time lines for each character really do play a part in their mission and purpose. I could feel the characters inward feelings whether they were afraid or enraged to the point that I could share in it with them. I wish that I could have known more of a back story for Solaris, but with this book as the first of a series it may be in a future installment.
I rate Solaris Seethes 3 out of 4 stars. I would recommend this for anyone who loves Science Fiction with a heaping dash of action. I do feel that the action scenes over-shadow the story. It would also be good for age ranges 12 and up.
