The Bonding by Imogen Keeper
The Bonding is a slightly erotic, si-fi fantasy novel starring Nissa and Tam. Nissa is the Queen Designate of planet Triannon. Her small red planet has been invaded by offworlders who have enslaved many, and killed more of her people. A small part of their population goes into hiding in the red forests. Out of desperation they send the royal family and 97 other lucky survivors out in cryo pods in search of help.
Tam, a warrior of the Tribe Argentus, happened upon Nissa's cryo pod while on a solo mission. Nissa learns she has been in cryo for nearly 500 years. By a twist of fate Tam must bond with Nissa to save her life. They become dependent on each other sexually, like an addict with their drug of choice because of the bonding. However, they also fall in love.
Once Tam takes Nissa back to his people they quickly realize the offworlders who attacked her home planet are the same race that attacked Tam’s people with biological warfare, the Vestige. Most of the female population of the Tribe died. That is how Nissa gets the Tribe to help her, with the promise of women who they can potentially procreate with. Will Nissa be able to love Tam and help her people? Is it too late to save her planet? Read to find out!
This book was not my favorite. It had its moments that made me love the characters and others when I wanted to put the book down. Many scenes depicted were over sexualized and it is not a book for faint of heart when it comes to profanity. That being said the book was, for the most part well written. It did change perspective a lot which could become confusing at times.
My favorite part of the book was the science fiction theme which is one of my favorites. The author had interesting takes on the different planets and their foliage. The picture that was painted of Triannon sounded beautiful and I could picture it in my mind. The vastness of empty space and the solar systems, very vividly expressed by the writing was nice. The character development was well done.
My least favorite part of this novel was the bonding itself. Sperm being referred to a serum and being the only cure for Nissa when she was revived from cryo was a bit unnerving. I feel it wasn’t necessary for the story line. It almost took away from the love between the characters. I love a good erotica but this didn’t make my list for that genre. It was far-fetched even for a si-fi fantasy book.
I gave this book a 2 out of 4 rating because the perspective changes didn’t flow as well as others and the odd plot of “sperm serum.” Other than those two elements I felt the book was well done and thought out. I would be willing to read the next book to see what happens to more of the characters story lines, especially Ajax. You will understand if you read the book. Many thanks to the author for creating a new world for readers.
