Escape by Belle Ami is a fast-paced thriller of a story, filled with steamy romance and on the edge of your seat action and adventure you would expect to find in an international spy novel set in the modern day Middle East.

When Layla Wallace, a doctoral candidate at Harvard, decides to accompany her boyfriend, Zamir, home to Dubai for the holidays, she had no idea her world would be turned upside down. When a group of Iranian's kidnap Zamir, they stumble upon Layla and decide to bring her with them. In Iran, Layla is thrown into Evin prison, a hell-hole if there ever was one. When a tall, dark, and handsome man saves her from being raped by a guard, she has no choice but to trust him. Surely Zamir's parents will pay the ransom negotiate their release, won't they?

Cyrus Hassani is a brilliant and trusted servant of the MOIS - the Ministry of Intelligence and Security of Iran’s nuclear program. But is he who he appears to be? When he saves the beautiful redheaded American from a probable rape at the hands of a vile prison guard, Cyrus has no idea just how intertwined their lives are about to become. While doing everything he can to prevent a nuclear apocalypse, he must also get Layla out of Iran. Will Cyrus save Layla? Will he sacrifice himself in order for Layla to get to Isreal? What isn't Layla telling him about her father, the MIT professor?

Ami should be praised for her research into various Middle Eastern cultures, along with nuclear and warfare terminology that aided in bringing this story to life. The complexity given to the characters kept this story from being a story of possible war, to something much deeper - a story about the lives changed by international wars and tensions. It was refreshing to read a story the included so many different religions and nationalities without the author's biasing or stereotyping affecting the way a reader views certain characters. In fact, the idea of two protagonists, one Jewish and one Muslim, finding love in the Middle East is an undertone to the love the torn countries to the East are in desperate need of.

Overall, I give Escape by Belle Ami 4 out of 4 stars. If you enjoy a realistic spy novel with a strong romantic and sexual storyline, then I highly recommend this book.
