Health Tips, Myths, and Tricks by Morton E. Tavel, MD
This is a very extensive health guide, very well explained and covering all sorts of topics I'm interested in. Topics like how healthy is chocolate, how much coffee can I drink, are there really any benefits if we start the day with breakfast, how unhealthy are trans fats and red meat, how to deal with salt in our food, and should we drink more or less red wine, and so many more. All those topics can easily be found in the table of contents so it’s easy for the reader to skip to things of his or her interest without having to read the whole book first. All those topics are thoroughly explained, with background documentation.
In the media there are a lot of food fads doing the rounds. It’s something of all times, but these days with so many so called internet experts it’s increasingly difficult to distinguish between what is true and what is not. There are so many popular theories about what is healthy and what we should eat or what we should leave out of our diet, without real explanation as to why we should or shouldn’t eat those foods. Often they contradict each other so it’s quite difficult to decide which claim to accept as true and which to ignore. In this book a lot of them are debunked or corroborated, with lots of solid documentation why.
There is also so much detailed information on healthy and non healthy foods, advised amounts per day and why you should or shouldn't eat certain foods, with their nutritional value explained.
What I really liked is that the book is divided in three sections: one is about tips for healthy living, one about common misconceptions and one about how we are tricked in spending our money on useless products and information. I myself feel regularly insecure about so many articles I read regarding health and I get quite often confused as to whether there is any value in those health and food statements.
This is not an easy read, like all those popular so called health books available to us who promise us a healthy life with a slim body if we only follow their instructions. Very tempting but usually not true, or if true not easily attainable for regular folks. It took me quite a while to get through it, I feel that might put some people off. But it is very useful as a guidance for healthy eating, to look up questions and insecurities we all have regarding healthy food, taking care of our bodies and living that healthy lifestyle a lot of us crave.
I will give this book 3 out of 4 stars. I like that it is thorough and extensive and an interesting read with lots of backing up, which is not a problem for me as an avid reader. I fear that a lot of people will have problems with how extensive it is, as not everybody has the reading experience or patience to tackle something this size.
