Review of “I Am a Soldier, First and Always”: The Distinguished Career of Winfield Scott Hancock
This volume serves as the second installment in the series chronicling the illustrious journey of Winfield Scott Hancock, the esteemed general of the Civil War and subsequent political figure. Detailing Hancock's remarkable ascent from his courageous command during the critical Battle of Gettysburg in 1863 to his poignant elevation to Lieutenant General on his deathbed over two decades later, this book offers a comprehensive account of his life. Following his deeds at Gettysburg, Hancock assumed leadership of the Department of Missouri before undertaking the task of overseeing reconstruction efforts in New Orleans. His diverse assignments also included a tenure in the Department of Dakota.
This aptly named tome encapsulates Hancock's unwavering dedication to duty amidst the tumult of warfare. Through vivid depictions of battlefields and precise military jargon, the author transported me to the front lines, portraying the brutality and bravery of 19th-century conflicts. Impeccably researched and presented in an engaging narrative, this volume will strongly resonate with aficionados of history and reenactment groups well-acquainted with the intricate nuances of the Civil War era.
I admire the presentation of the book. Complementing the eloquent prose are informative maps and illustrations, along with a comprehensive bibliography, facilitating deeper exploration for those eager to comprehend Hancock's indelible imprint on American history during its most turbulent period.
I recommend this volume to enthusiasts of historical narratives. Even readers less versed in Civil War history will find themselves ensnared by the gripping saga as Hancock emerges not just as a military figure but as a man grappling with the complexities of his era. By intertwining Hancock's struggles with the broader canvas of societal transformation, the author imparts invaluable insights into the human toll exacted by war, both on and off the battlefield.
I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars due to its superb editing. There were no grammatical errors. I found nothing to dislike about the book. "I Am a Soldier, First and Always": The Distinguished Career of Winfield Scott Hancock by James Harold Kelly, is a great read.
