Health Tips, Myths, and Tricks: A Physician’s Advice is a non-fiction book created by Dr. Morton E. Tavel, MD as a result of his research for his previous book entitled “Snake Oil is Alive and Well. The Clash between Myths and Reality. Reflections of a Physician.” In the process of his research he encountered not only additional widespread myths and scams but much additional information of positive value for public consumption which were not included in his previous book. “The book is intended to provide an introduction to contemporary scientific thought processes and serve as a guide for everyone on how to follow a healthy lifestyle while, at the same time, how to avoid wasting large resources on useless—sometimes dangerous—techniques and treatments.”

The first part of the book deals with general information about health and wellness--from losing weight to simple nasal allergies; yummy foods to avoid because of its saturated fat, sodium and calorie content; sodium content of foods we usually eat and other varied topics regarding health. With each topic one can benefit from the tips and guides the author provided since he presented both what works and what doesn’t work.

“Medical Tests and Yearly Checkups: Are They Really Necessary?” and other controversial issues are found in the second part of book. In here, the reader can find clarifications regarding some health-related conspiracy beliefs that the author raised based on the result of his research. The reader might also realize that some of what he/she’s been practicing really does not have any health benefits but only entail unnecessary expenses.

The last part of the book is quite intriguing. In here, the author is very bold in naming institutions, drug companies, personalities, drug brands and products that are doing tricks and scam just to take away people’s money. He even concur in the defunding and dissolution of NCCIH (National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health) which according to the author is best summarized in the comprehensive report of W.I Simpson in the quackwatch website. But, when the reference site was search, it does not exist. After reading this part I find myself wanting to research further…is it really true? The way I perceive it the author wanted to change the mindset of the reader against non-conventional medicine which has already gain acceptance worldwide.

In general, I find the book informative and practical. I would recommend it to those who are health conscious. The book can also be used as a health reference guide. I would rate it with 3 out of 4 star since there are parts that I need to reread in order to get the authors point.
