Raven's Peak Review
Raven’s Peak by Lincoln Cole is book 1 in his World on Fire series. In this book we are immediately introduced to a character who is known as Reverend. He’s in prison for the killings of many people. He’s there to atone for his sins and there he wishes to stay but a woman has come to see him because three rescued girls of their order are missing. Not only are they missing but some Hunters have been killed as well and they want and need Arthur to go and deal with the situation and rescue the girls if he can. One of the hunters believed to be dead is a young woman that Arthur raised and took in as one of his own but she’s not dead…she’s possessed. Arthur sacrifices himself in order to not only save her but to save the other girls who were taken. Fast forward several months and the young woman Arthur sacrificed himself for is on the hunt for another demon who is looking to stir up and bring chaos. Thing is this demon has also chosen a Council member’s family to be his next host and to identify Abigail as someone who is stalking him so that he can expose her and make things harder for her. Orders have come down for Abigail to take the demon out and to go to a town called Raven’s Peak. What none of them know is that while Raven’s Peak is meant to be a wild goose chase there is more to it and things get more dangerous exponentially when she gets there and realizes the truth.
This is the first book that I have read by Lincoln Cole and I have to say that this book grabbed me from the beginning and kept me engaged the whole way through. This is one of those books that you will find hard to put down and hard to put out of your mind as you go about your day because you want to know what happens next with the characters. The two main characters Haatim and Abigail are easily engaging and keep you wanting to know more about each of them. Haatim is a college student who is trying to escape from being around his family so that he can distance himself from the anger and the pain of losing his sister to an incurable disease of which he also blames his father for but he also blames God. Abigail is battling with being labeled a pariah because of what happened to her and wanting to know how to get Arthur back and being told by the Order to leave it alone and just to do as she is told. Haatim is in the dark concerning the role that his family really plays and Abigail is being manipulated like a pawn but the truth soon comes to light for both of them.
For me there really isn’t anything that I don’t like about this story. There were moments of where I was concerned that the author would become absorbed in some religious spiel about why Haatim was losing his faith and how unfair it was that his sister had died but the author stayed really focused in on the story itself and I really appreciate that. My only complaint would have to be concerning the editing and the fact that several grammatical and spelling errors are allowed to slip through. Other than that the story is really well written and engaging. The characters all draw you in and have you wanting to know more about each one of them. The demon characters make you want to know more about not just them but the ones that are like them that they themselves associate with.
I really like how well Haatim holds it together when he is faced with certain situations. Where most characters would have lost it and become a complete mess he really shows his strength by staying strong and pushing forward despite the situation. The story moves really well and smoothly without there being any hiccups or spots of where you feel like the author really struggled to push forward. I love the thrill of how tense the story becomes when the Order makes a snap decision concerning the town because of the demon roaming free in it. On one hand I wanted it to happen and then on the other hand I wanted the characters to at least have a chance to stop it all from going to hell.
If it weren’t for some of the grammatical and spelling errors I would more than happily rate this book 4 out of 4 stars but as is I have to rate it 3 out of 4. This book is truly engaging and a great supernatural/horror story. I am more than eager to read the next book in this series because of how engaging it is. I want to know more about what happens next with the characters and the demons. You can honestly almost imagine this to be real and going on somewhere. If you are looking for a book that blends the supernatural and horror genres together in such a way that it grabs you from the first paragraph and keeps you engaged then this is the story for you. Definitely a book to check out for sure.
I voluntarily read a copy of this book.
