Health Tips, Myths and Tricks by Morton E Tavel MD
This is a non-fiction book written by a medical doctor designed to expose the many misconceptions regarding conventional medicine and alternative medication. This book gives the doctors honest opinion concerning both types of treatment, therefore I feel that it would be helpful for anyone who is unsure of which method to utilise.
Health tips: I found the health tips practical, useful and informative. Many of the questions that I have wanted to ask my doctor are answered here. Do you know how often you need to go for a check-up? Are you allergic to iodine if you are allergic to shellfish? All of these and many more questions are answered in this book.
Myths and tricks: There are 62 short chapters in this book, each one covering a specific topic such as allergies, vaccinations, detoxification of your body, etc. The doctor exposes fraudulent health care products and explains why they are allowed to be sold, and what to beware of. For those who are trying to lose weight, the doctor exposes the diet pill industry and all of the scams associated with it.
Chapter 54 says: Snake oil rises again – anatomy of a typical scam. In this chapter, as well as in many other chapters, the doctor not only exposes the scams, but quotes scientific proof and studies to back up his claims.
I have found this book to be informative and helpful, but I was distracted by a few punctuation errors. The most irritating thing is that the heading is at the top of every page and there is no spacing between the heading and the first line, so each time there is a new page, I read the heading again. A few punctuation errors that I noted were: In the review there is a comma after a question mark. On page 14 he has (“bad”) and (“good”). There were a few grammatical errors, and at times I had to re-read the sentence to get the meaning of what he was conveying. This book does need editing, especially as I felt there were times that he was addressing the medical community and not the layman.
In conclusion, I am giving this book 2 out of 4 stars. I found many tips to be helpful and myths debunked, and I would recommend it to anyone who is wasting time and money on bogus healthcare products.
