Wrong Turn, Right Guy by Haylie B. Fox is a standalone romance with a happily ever after. This story is a roller coaster of emotional ups and downs. The main character, Theresa “Tessa” Vadney, has devoted her life to her career and decides it is time to make a change.
After devoting the last 12 years of her life to the same law firm, Tessa decides that she needs more. She is forced to choose between keeping her career or taking a vacation in the beautiful Italian countryside for her best friend’s wedding. She chooses the vacation and walks away from the only constant she has ever had in her adult life.
Tessa hits obstacle after obstacle before leaving for Italy as she looks for a job to start upon her return to the United States. Nothing is going her way and she finally has to give up her search and focus on the trip. As she and her mother, who is along for this crazy ride, arrive in Italy, Tessa quickly realizes that she is destined to be miserable, as even on foreign soil things still seem to be going awry.
There are ups and downs around every corner. Just when we think things can’t get worse, Tessa finds herself with a broken down rental car, lost in Italy. This is when we meet not one, but two handsome young men, that are more than willing to help Tessa and her mother make it back to her best friend’s wedding in time. Tessa will find herself and her happily ever after in this story of self-discovery and romance.
While the story itself was great, I found that it started very slow. However, I stuck it out, because I could tell that the details put into the story would be even better once it really picked up. This is more than just a romance. It’s a book following one woman’s journey of self.
If you’re willing to hang in there through the emotional ups and downs before getting to the romance, then this book is for you. The slow first half and few minor grammatical errors are the reasons I gave this book 3 out of 4 stars. The book does pick up pace in the second half and we are no longer wondering whether Tessa will be alone forever, always doubting herself. Wrong Turn, Right Guy could have easily been a 4-star book, had the pace picked up a little sooner. All in all, I see a potential hit for Haylie B. Fox and will continue to look for her books in the future.
