The book Heaven and Earth by Arturo Riojas is a science fiction book that was published in 2016 by Xlibris. The author is a PhD holder who is an engineer with focus on environmental engineering. The books purpose is to disseminate knowledge on cadmium poisoning while focusing on two alternate worlds. One of the worlds is earth while the other is an alien world in the Sirius star occupied by alien life forms of a world known as Treretum. The book focuses on an unlikely partnership between humans and the aliens all individuals of high intellectual capacity that work together to redeem the populations of their worlds from near extinction. The book also focuses on the effects brought about by cadmium poisoning on the health of the humans. Injustices that the United State government agencies have placed on the world population through a lack of protection and the price that the citizens of the planet earth have had to pay for their ignorance have also been addressed.

The book is quite interesting. However, the first chapter was not very enticing and took quite a while to read through. Once through with the first chapter the story begins to pick up and gets quite interesting as it progresses. I find it very distracting to have the cadmium poisoning facts placed after very chapter. I did not like this arrangement. The facts are quite interesting and indicate very impressive research for a non medical professional author but the fact that they appear after every chapter reduces the flow of the story for the reader. I think the cadmium poisoning facts should appear at the end of the book after the epilogue as an additional appendix. It is also evident that most of the cadmium facts are a repetition of the same points with very few new points after every chapter. The incorporation of the cadmium poisoning facts within the text has been done exquisitely and make the story very interesting to read as well as enlightening for a reader who did not know the effects of cadmium poisoning on human health.

I think the focus on “cause and effect” and “delayed response” illustrated by the author is very important. This can help to jog the readers mind on the things that we consider important, including the uptake of medication just to treat the symptoms but not to eliminate the cause. The layout of details and the writing is quite good and planned exquisitely. The presentation of ideas to educate the reader on the dangers of exposure to cadmium poisoning through food intake is well laid out.

I barely noticed any grammatical or spelling errors and the book seems to be properly edited. I did however find the mixture of Spanish in the text with English quite distracting. Some of the chapter titles do not also directly relate with the content of the chapters which created some confusion. However, this was only for a few chapters in the book.

The ending is quite surprising and focuses on the freedom of two races from oppression and exploitation laid upon them by an unjust government that is out to benefit the elite and high powers at the expense of the ordinary citizen. I consider some of the ideas presented in the book quite controversial but very interesting and mind stimulating. However, I worry in earlier times that this book would have been banned due to the allegations made against the government but the disclaimer section of the book makes it clear that most of the illustration given in the book are purely fictional and hence this should take care of any legal issues. I believe that individuals that are interested in conspiracy theories would really enjoy and connect with these book. It seems it was solely written for such an audience. The title does not project the intrigues of the book and barely sells this book to its target audience. The presentation of many issues in our society can be quite an eye opener for the reader who is naive to the injustices in our society. I believe that all individuals in a society young and old would enjoy reading this book and it is not limited to a particular group of readers. I give it 3 out of 4 stars.
