Who Told You That You Were Naked? A Refreshing Reexamination of the Garden of Eden by William E. Combs is a non-fiction book that takes a closer look at Adam and Even while they were in the Garden of Eden. For those who only take their story as fiction, Mr. Combs gives an in-depth exploration into its non-fiction premises. Using scripture for support, he gives a different perspective of why and how Original Sin occurred. As Mr. Combs presents his scriptural evidence, he also takes the reader through an examination of the New Testament.
Throughout the biblical education given, Mr. Combs also includes further information on pertinent passages, thus giving the reader a better understanding of the scripture. In addition to Mr. Combs’ biblical interpretation, he also includes personal stories and testimonies to help paint the picture of his book’s purpose. Finally, to provoke thought, each chapter ends with study questions that allow for further discussion.
Overall, I was thoroughly impressed with the different perspective Mr. Combs gave on the Garden of Eden and its inhabitants. I would’ve never thought to approach the scripture in the way provided. Mr. Combs not only gave me a new insight into how God handled Adam and Eve’s failure to obey his command regarding the tree of knowledge of good and evil, but he also gave me a better understanding of the scripture he used.
Mr. Combs did an excellent job explaining the scripture in a way that would allow even a person who didn’t go to seminary school, to feel like they’ve learned something new. In sharing his different perspective on Adam and Eve, he made their actions more understandable as he explained what their possible mindsets might’ve been. Mr. Combs gives the reader a new way to look at life and how we make the choices we do.
After receiving this new point of view on the events that led up to Adam and Eve’s inability to remain in the garden because of their choice to disobey God, I would give Who Told You That You Were Naked? A Refreshing Reexamination of the Garden of Eden a 3 out of 4 stars and would recommend it to anyone regardless of their faith. The reason I can’t give it a perfect 4 out of 4 stars is because of a couple of scriptural misspellings, and at times, I had to reread sentences because they read awkwardly at first.
