Solaris Seethes by Janet McNulty is the first book in a series, and I am so excited to read the next one!
After her home planet is destroyed, Rynah finds herself hiding out in space with an old space ship that her grandfather had left her, Solaris. Solaris is not just a ship, either, she is an artificial intelligence created by Rynah's grandfather, Marlow, and she has quite the attitude. With Solaris's help, Rynah recruits four Earthlings from throughout time to come aboard and help her find the mysterious crystals from an ancient legend before the big bad villain, Klanor, can capture them and use them for his own nefarious purposes. Their journeys in this book include taking on monstrous living plants, natives that believe in human sacrifice, unusual animals on a tundra, a giant shark, and even space pirates.
Of course, with this being the first book of the series, it does end on a little bit of a cliffhanger. However, the threads of this particular story are tied up rather nicely at the end. Like I have already mentioned, I really can not wait to read the second one, and I give this book a four out of four rating. The story hooks you right from the beginning, and even though there is a few times where Rynah is not very likable, you can not help but root for her and her new companions.
Outside of Rynah's sometimes abrasive personality, there is not a single thing I dislike about the book. Despite Rynah not always being likable, she is real though. She has feelings and emotions just like anyone else (Earthling or otherwise). In fact, all of the characters in this book are so well developed and thought out. Each one has their own unique personalities and quirks, and the continuity throughout the book is wonderful. I also really love how each of the Earthlings are introduced in the book being that they come from different times (a Viking king, an Ancient Greek philosopher, a modern day teenager, and a futuristic technology whiz). Though personally, Alfric, the Viking King, is my favorite character in this book.
I honestly cannot rave enough about how much I enjoyed this book. There are a few moments where it pulls at the heartstrings, and I did find myself starting to cry, but it is so good. This is definitely a book that I would recommend to other people, though I can see where younger people may enjoy it more. It’s the kind of book that I could see being used to spark an interest in reading for younger kids.
