It's no easy take off with Solaris Seethes, a science fiction novel by Janet McNulty in which five unlikely strangers come together to save the people of Lanyr after their planet is destroyed.

Solaris Seethes is the first book in the Solaris Saga series. Rynah and her ship, Solaris, escape after their planet Lanyr is destroyed by the enemies. She must find who has survived the destruction as well as relying on myths that were told find these hidden crystals. Before this event, Rynah never put much faith into the myths and didn't believe these crystals were real. But now she is faced with the realization that she must find them before they end up in the wrong hands and more planets in the universe are destroyed. In the midst of all this going on, four strangers from earth, all from different time periods, called to Solaris to help Rynah find the crystals and help save everyone who made it out of Lanyr alive. On this journey, each of the characters will find out who they really are and perhaps may find courage in them they never knew existed.

McNulty got right into the story immediately within the first chapter. My attention was grabbed and I couldn't wait to read more. What made this chapter interesting to was that it wasn't being told by a person. It was being told in the ship, Solaris's view. You didn't know it at first until you got to the end of the chapter. I was hoping that the book would've continued in the view of the ship as that would make it different than other Science Fiction books I've read in the past. Unfortunately, it was only in Solaris's view for the first chapter and then switched to other character's views. That's when it began to get confusing for me. One or two characters switching is fine. But when you're getting into the views of each character and there's five, I felt it took away from the book. I wish McNulty kept it in the view of the ship talking to make the book interesting.

When we meet each of the strangers, McNulty dug into the back story, giving the reader a look into their lives. This brought them to life and you could even relate to them. My favorite character was Brie, who was chosen from the year 2014. A high school student who was bullied, it was a character many could relate to and you could see why she was chosen to be in this group of heroes to save the day. Solaris may have been a ship, but McNulty brought her to life that you almost forgot she wasn't a human. Rynah was the only character I couldn't take to at all in this book. She got on my nerves right from the beginning and nothing changed my mind. She was unlikable and at times, she came off as a bully. I don't know what McNulty's intentions were to make her so mean and tough, especially to Brie, but it ruined much of the book.

At times, there was too much going on in the book, it was hard to keep track. McNulty threw in too many ideas at once, it would've been better to stick with one event going on at a time and let the reader enjoy. It was a struggle to get through this book, besides the action and the characters being hard to relate to, that I couldn't wait to finish this book. I was expecting a spectacular Science Fiction novel, but I didn't find that in this book.

I rated this book 2 out of 4 Stars. It had it's moments and as I said, I liked how Solaris seemed to have feelings like a human even though she was a ship. I would recommend this to anyone who wants to read a different type of Science Fiction book because it didn't feel like your typical one to me.
