The Bonding Review

Imogen Keeper’s The Bonding is a novel which gives an account of a relatively strong bond that develops between the two characters in the book. The two characters are known as Tam and Nissa. The Bonding can be classified as a romance novel by basing fundamentally on the plot of the story as written by Keeper. Tam is a tribal warrior who comes from one planet and on the other hand, Nissa is a princess from another planet that was once wealthy.

The planets where the two characters come from are totally different in terms of the environmental appearance. As a matter of fact, the female species is extinct on the planet where Tam comes from and this implies that there are no women. This is hence a primordial factor that attracts Tam to Nissa thus depicting the former’s character as one that is based on strong sexual feelings. This is backed up by the reaction made by Tam when he spotted Nissa trapped in the orb; “Oh Wow! A woman.” This is quite nasty considering the state of Nissa as she was unconscious.

Although Imogen Keeper’ text The Bonding is considered as a romance novel, one the outstanding thematic aspects is based on the fact that Nissa has a strong will to save her planet and its people. In as much as the bond between Tam and Nissa is strong, Nissa’s mission ultimately leads to a break-up. Nissa hence decides to sacrifice her love for the sake of saving her planet and its people and this comes at a price.
She endures a relatively high degree of physical and emotional pain and this introduces another twist in the plot of the novel. This twist is one that is embedded with a lot of emotional struggle between the two main characters, Tam and Nissa. It is at this particular juncture that other characters emerge and one of the prominent secondary characters is known as Ajax. Ajax is a close friend to Tam and offers him emotional support at the time when he had broken up with Nissa.

The novel brings forth a story based on romance but at the same time the plot is full of other thematic aspects. The novel, however, cannot be classified as one of the outstanding romance novels and literature texts in view of the aspect of character development and themes. Keeper ought to have focused more on this two.

I therefore rate this book 2 out of 4 stars as the author jungles in on more other themes .She ought to have given one theme serious weight ,and in this case, love so that the book can be termed as a romantic novel. Moreover, the lack of concentration of the author brings to the fore other themes and suffocate what was to be the theme. On character development , there's no intention by the author to bring them up powerfully . The reader is left to do it, though liberating but bad for a fictional work.
