My Trip to Adele seamlessly ties together the stories of 3 people who were joined by only one common interest, their love of Adele. A devoted mother, a long lost lover, and an unhappy married couple are all looking to an Adele concert in Verona, Italy to potentially solve their problems. Each of these people has their own countries and cultures. They have their own life battles and lessons to learn. Each character we meet is flawed but likable and somehow, all brought together by the lyrics of Adele songs.

First, we learn of Elias, a Moroccan man who lives in Rome. He learns that a black magic curse was put on him 8 years ago and he now wonders if this could be the reason he left his maybe true love, Malika. Next, we meet Nadia, a single mother from Jordan who has been battling her husband in court for the sake of her son. Nadia has devoted herself to giving her son a balanced life, which is proving harder than she could have imagined. Her only dream is to take her son to see Adele live, but that is also proving to be problematic. Finally, there is Yaser a married doctor living in Las Vegas. Yaser realizes his marriage isn’t all he imagined to be. His wife has proven to be relentlessly stubborn and uninspiring. He has started to rebel against his wife, but will an Adele concert bring back love they had for each other the night he proposed?

After reading My Trip to Adele, I have to admire the two authors ambition. Writing three different stories and tying them together in a natural way is not an easy thing to do. This book was a great example of how to do it, the connections in the stories were always subtle. None of the character’s struggles and paths could relate to each other in any way, except for one: Adele. The inner conflicts of each character are brought out in a way that is immediately relatable and somehow exciting. There is a character for everyone to relate to, but we can all learn a valuable lesson from every one of them.

The lessons the characters learn, and in return help us learn, seem to come straight out of Adele’s music. They are lessons about finding love, happiness, and your own strength to move forward in life. This book is a great read for anyone coming to the age of adulthood, or anyone who finding life’s unexpected challenges catching up on them. There are important lessons here for everyone to learn and I would recommend it to anyone who asked about it.

Although I loved the book, it was not perfect. I did find quite a few grammatical errors while reading and would recommend an edit before publication. Also, the incorporation of Adele songs gets a little repetitive and can sometimes hinder the flow of the reading. Sometimes a song comes in at just the right moment and it is a great touch, other times it feels that the song was forced into the writing. The chapter titles and song lyrics relate almost perfectly to the story being told, but they seem like they are forced into the story. The flow of the writing is more important. You want your reader to be fully immersed in the writing and when the flow is broken, that could force the reader out of the story.

I know a lot of work went into the chapter headings and the incorporation of the songs and I appreciate that. I love the song lyrics at the end of the chapter and I want them to stay, but I don’t think they have to be added to the story. I would have liked it better if they were just written as a closing, related to the story but not tied into it. This way, they would remind me of a poem, summarizing the events that just unfolded. With the grammatical errors in mind and the minor critique, I would have to rate the book a 3 out of 4 stars. I enjoyed the book and would definitely recommend it to others. I hope to be reading more work from these authors soon.
