Raven’s Peak is an intense paranormal thriller that succeeds in keeping the reader on the edge of their seat with each turning page. The story opens with the mysterious Reverend Arthur Vangeest who has voluntarily lived in a prison cell for the last five years. He is hardly sane and derives satisfaction in inflicting pain upon himself. One day, he gets a visitor named Frieda, who works for an ancient Council that fights demons. She has come to meet Arthur against the Council’s wishes about a matter of utmost importance and she feels it would be too late by the time the Council arrives at a decision. Frieda tells him that his adopted daughter, Abigail, had been killed by a demon when on a mission and requests him to help banish the demon. Frieda feels Arthur is the only one who can handle this case and he, wanting to avenge the death of his daughter, agrees.
When the people of the little mountain town of Raven’s Peak starts acting crazy, the Council sends in Abigail Dressler, a talented hunter, to look into the matter. She uncovers a demonic presence that is stronger than any she had ever encountered before. She is aided by Haatim Arison, an unsuspecting blogger with no former experience with the supernatural. The matter becomes personal for Abigail when Reverand Arthur is banished to Hell when he tries to rescue her. Can they stop the demon before it is too late?
The Council does not give Abigail full authority since she was possessed by a demon almost six months back. She is determined to prove herself this time but unfortunately, upon Arthur’s death, she is told to drop her investigation or else face the consequences. She decides to go against the council when she realizes that someone badly wants Haatim dead because of his heritage. Who is Haatim really and why is he of interest?
Raven’s Peak is no ordinary demon slayer story. It has originality and depth. The author is confident with his words and his style of writing is absorbing. The characters are strong and well-written and made me stay with Abigail and Haatim till the very end. Haatim hardly has any experience in the paranormal, but as the story progresses, he learns about his heritage and evolves into a strong and fearless demon slayer.
The action packed scenes makes you want to keep on reading. The book has an exciting start, an amazing storyline and the author does not disappoint at the climax. Though the story is part of a series, there is no cliff hanger. This is a definite plus for me as I hate to wait for the next book to be published to know what happens next. Overall, an excellent read. I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars.
