Health Tips, Myths, and Tricks is a nonfiction book written by Morton E. Tavel, MD, published by Brighton Publishing LLC, Copyright 2015. Dr. Tavel is a retired physician, with a long career practicing in Internal Medicine with a specific expertise in cardiovascular disease. Dr. Tavel has written this book as a general informational piece written for both laymen as well as those in the medical and scientific community. He explains and assesses various popular topics that have come under question by the medical and scientific community regarding personal health. The book is divided into three sections: "Tips", "Myths", and "Tricks", with each section subdivided by chapters dedicated to a particular topic of controversy. The book is well written and is structured in order to be easily readable and understandable by both the general population as well as those with a more in-depth knowledge of medicine and health.

Dr. Tavel discusses in great detail such relevant topics as diet, weight loss, food supplements, high blood pressure (hypertension), junk food, smoking, sleep habits, back pain, exercise, hygiene, allergies. These include, in specific, the benefits versus risks of weight loss aids, certain types of fats, coffee, tea, and fish in the diet, red wine, artificial sweeteners, pain killers, and the potential dangers of dietary sodium.

Other useful information provided in this book includes a review of the utility of energy drinks, treatment of the common cold, gluten-free diets, fortification of foods, bottled water, probiotics, dietary supplements (including vitamins), and bodily "detoxification" methods and beliefs. Other issues addressed include the vaccination controversy, chiropractic care, alternative medicine, and even a concise assessment of polygraph testing. In his reviews and commentaries on each subject, Dr. Tavel attempts to provide the reader with a general background of the topic as well as an assessment of pros and cons which he supports with referenced material.

This book is a useful guide to the public addressing issues that commonly affect our daily lives, health and well-being. As Dr. Tavel explains, there is a lot of misinformation in the community at large regarding the various topics that are covered in this book. The information he conveys is relevant on health, economic as well as environmental levels. The book is a refreshing and enlightening testament to the many fallacies that the public are confronted with on a daily basis.

An additional quality about this book that makes it more easily readable is Dr. Tavel's occasional use of humor. This is utilized to underscore some of the points he argues in the various chapters. Furthermore, the book's structure, being subdivided into chapters of particular topic interest, allows the reader to quickly and easily focus on any of a variety of important and personally relevant points of interest. One does not need to necessarily read the entire work in order to glean useful and accurate information.

Despite the fact that this book is well written, there are numerous typos and other printing errors which frequently appear. The first is a typo involving the first word on page 35. There are other more obvious printing errors, including obvious word spacing problems seen in more than one chapter as well as on the first page of the references section. Another issue is the presence of boldface headings appearing alone at the bottom of the page, followed by their respective text on the next page. This is seen on multiple occasions, including on pages 77, 93, 137, 153, 168, 192, 209, and 266. The reference section also contains reference numbers of varying font size, rather than the preferred consistent font size.

Overall, I rate this book as a 3 out of 4 stars, with only the presence of numerous typographical errors being of concern. I enjoyed reading Dr. Tavel's insightful and, at times, amusing book for the simple fact that it is an effort to give true perspective to a variety of subjects that affect most, if not all of us, in a very personal way. The book is an effort to educate the reader on many topics that have been misconstrued and, in some cases, abused by the public, industry, as well as the government. This is very useful reading which is strongly recommended.
