[Following is a volunteer review of "Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventures" by Catherine A. Pepe.]
Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventures by Catherine A. Pepe is an exceptionally touching family story. The relationship between Donny and his little sister, Mary Grace, is one of a kind. The plot twists when the parents go on an unanticipated mission in Africa and leave the children with the responsibility of adjusting to a new life in California with the grandparents.
The book succeeds uniquely in showing how Mary Grace and Donny are glued together by the same cord, writing of their persevering hands that hold each other firmly through those hard times. The experience of the children as they settle into their new surroundings immediately captures the audience's attention and portrays the story with a great flow of events.
In addition, the way the author deals with the emotions of the children without any bias makes the book powerful. The story appears to disencumber the sadness and anger and thus suggests ways of solving those, as well as letting the kids know that it is normal to feel such feelings. The way the bullying issue was dealt with during the chapters creates a diversified and realistic narration.
The representation of the expressions and emotions in the novel really stands out by picturing the characters' circumstances, from absurd situations to angry or joyful ones. It is from Donny, a tremendously cheerful young man with an unquestionable love for his young friend, that the audience obtains hope and support. The book leaves me with no irritation.
Mary Grace's character and an engaging story line play a major role in earning the book 5 stars out of 5. The editing is flawless; no mistakes were encountered while reading. This book is highly recommended for children who love reading detective stories, and it seems to be especially popular with youngsters who have siblings dealing with disabilities, as it has a very beautiful message about love and sympathy towards them.
