Review of What Do You Think, Mr. Collins?
What Do You Think, Mr. Collins? by Neal Bialostosky is a truly captivating science fiction story that gets you thinking deeply about the world. Its carefully crafted plot goes beyond regular sci-fi, blending in mystery, secrets, murder, and humor. The story paints a clear and realistic picture of a future shaped by AI's rapid growth, showing how much we rely on technology. It's a story that stirs up a mix of emotions: curiosity, excitement, laughter, and fear. Readers will find themselves drawn into the narrative, eagerly waiting to see what happens next. It's definitely a book that leaves a lasting impression.
In the story, different things happen in various parts of the technologically advanced city of Paradise, which exists in a parallel universe quite different from ours. It's hard to tell humans and AI apart here. The tale begins with Sidney Maddow, CEO of Personal Androids Incorporated, talking about a groundbreaking invention with his human-like AI assistant. Sidney believes this invention could change everything, even defying diseases and death. As he dreams of Nobel recognition, we, the readers, wonder about the nature and impact of this innovation. Meanwhile, Ben Collins, a network manager, is puzzled by a strange project given to him by his new boss, Dr. Norman Hippleton. Despite his confusion, Ben must face the challenge during an important meeting. Suddenly, he sees something suspicious between his boss and a colleague, Evelyn, which leaves him shaken. What happened between them, and what does the mysterious project mean?
Then comes Gregory Lind, nicknamed the Black Hole, hiding dark secrets and caught up in a revenge plan. His bid for mayor gets tangled in an unexpected disaster during a debate, leading to a terrible tragedy. What secrets drive Lind's enemies, and what causes the horrifying incident? Amidst these events, the story explores how different characters' lives intersect, showing how society relies on AI and the consequences of that dependence. Despite the many happenings, the story flows smoothly, keeping readers engaged and eager for the resolution.
The most striking part of the book for me was the profound realization I had while reading about the potential consequences of technology and AI misuse. It taught me the importance of not relying too much on AI to the point where we overlook the value of human labor, skills, and efforts. While AI makes many tasks easier, relying on it too heavily could lead to machines dominating the job market and leaving humans unemployed. The introduction of Nanettes, versatile robots capable of handling various household tasks, shows this reliance. For instance, a mother leaving her child solely in the care of a Nanette highlights this dependence. Despite AI's efficiency, it lacks emotion, as seen in the massacre during the debate event, reminding us of its dangers.
The complex plot, filled with diverse characters and events, keeps readers engaged. The author's skill in crafting dialogue-driven prose with touches of humor adds to the book's appeal, allowing readers to vividly imagine each scene. Also, the inclusion of insightful quotes at the beginning of each chapter adds depth to the narrative. The anticipation of an unexpected ending and the suspenseful unveiling of secrets keep readers hooked, eagerly turning pages. The author's portrayal of an advanced universe, along with poignant moments like the recollection of the great earthquake, evokes wonder and empathy. This compelling narrative ensures an enjoyable and unforgettable reading experience, promising satisfaction to discerning readers.
I couldn't find a single flaw in the book; it held my attention from beginning to end. Although it contains some profane language, it doesn't bother me personally, but I mention it for those who might be sensitive. Additionally, the book is exceptionally well-edited; I didn't encounter any errors throughout. This book stands out as one of the best science fiction and fantasy novels I've ever read, one I'd happily revisit many times. If you enjoy excitement and thrills in your reading, this is a must-have.
In conclusion, it offered an exciting journey and insightful discoveries. I give it a solid 5 out of 5, and I wholeheartedly recommend it to fellow fantasy fans and anyone intrigued by futuristic tales full of suspense and hidden truths. This book deserves a permanent spot on my shelf, and I'm sure other readers will feel the same after reading it.
