Who Told You That You Were Naked?
A Refreshing Reexamination of the Garden of Eden
.
By William E. Combs

Remember the Adam and Eve story? If you want to read it in a more detailed form, with some humor, then you have to read this book where Adam has a pet called Lively. Who Told You That You Were Naked?, a book written by William E. Combs is non fiction. It emphasizes on sin and faith, and is also an analysis of the Bible. The author gives an account of his first encounter with heavenly light at the age of five. He was outside in the night and was mesmerized to see a flood of lights producing different colors that seemed to be dancing in the heavens. The author candidly introduces his wife Miriam who also does have encounters with the light. He tells us how at one time Miriam had an encounter with bright heavenly light that embraced her while she was sleeping in college. Miriam has the ability to give correct prediction. Incidentally, the author has this ability too. In fact, both of them have also encountered satan in their lives and he gives a detailed account of it.

When God asked Adam where he was, after he ate the forbidden fruit, he said that he was hiding because he was naked. God asked him who told him that he was naked. The author likens this to our desire of the flesh and pride of life. Who told us that we need these desires? We sometimes imagine we already have a solution or better understanding without realizing how irrelevant it is. The author gives an example of someone who is praying to God with a mindset of their own solution instead of waiting for God to give the solution. Another example he gives is of the disciples who could not drive out a demon from a young boy. Jesus told them that they had little faith. These disciples’ desire was to drive out the demon. They forgot to pray to God to do His will. Who Told You That You Are Naked shows us how people get worried over what is irrelevant. Instead of Adam getting worried that he had disobeyed God, he was worried mostly about his nakedness.

This book is very detailed and the author even describes how mouth watering juice ran down Eve’s cheeks and neck as she ate the forbidden fruit. When she told Adam about the fruit, he scrutinized her body to see whether any parts were changing. As a result of eating the forbidden fruit, God gave man power to rule over his wife. Decision between man and wife should be made as a team to avoid making decisions without consulting the other partner as Eve did. We now have sin crouching at the door, ready to happen. Sin masters you if you fail to master it. As a punishment from God, offspring from woman will use a stick to hit the snake’s head and the snake will bite their heel. This could be the reason Adam’s first offspring was called Cain so that he could fulfill his role. Cain failed to master sin and killed his brother. According to Paul in the new testament, if you do what you do not want, it is no longer you who does it but sin that dwells within you. Basically, it is the knowledge of good and evil.

I give this book 4 out of 4 stars. It is professionally edited and interesting to read. It makes it easy to understand the Bible.

I recommend this book to anyone who likes reading the Bible and those who would like to understand it better. I would not recommend it to children because the encounter with satan is very detailed and not suitable for their age.

Hi Rosemary, I've also reviewed this book in the past. I like your review very much, even though your approach is somehow different from mine. It shows how we can see things from different perspectives, and still agree on the basic facts. Kudos for an interesting review.
