Solaris Seethes: Solaris Saga Book 1 by Janet McNulty is a futuristic novel set in outer space within a different galaxy. This story is full of action, self-discovery, and wit. Rynah’s story begins right away with the destruction of her home planet, Lanyr, with the help of her grandfather’s old ship Solaris she is able to escape. Rynah is then forced to decide whether or not to follow the myth’s that were told to her when she was little. Solaris, a spunky ship with an attitude all of her own, shares the myths with Rynah trying to convince her that these legends are true. Solaris recruits with her with four unlikely heroes (the philosopher, the warrior, the lover, and the inventor) from a galaxy that was never relevant in order to save Rynah’s home along with all of the other galaxies.
I have to say that McNulty was very successful in the first installment of this saga. The action started right away which grabbed my attention and went straight into the story. Rynah’s home was destroyed after the crystal which held her planet’s magnetics polarity was stolen. She then escapes her planet on her grandfather’s old ship, Solaris. Solaris is the artificial intelligence of the ship but so much more than that. She has a personality all of her own and is very opinionated. She provides Rynah with everything she needs on her journey. After reviewing the legends with Rynah they come to the conclusion that they need the four heroes mentioned in order to save everybody.
The philosopher, Solon, the warrior, Alfric, the lover, Brie, and the inventor, Tom, are all transported to Solaris from different ages from the planet Earth. Once they are on the ship Solaris and Rynah must convince them to help her find the remaining crystals to save everybody. Each character brings their own contributions to the team, even if they are not seen right away. The four heroes immediately bond together and help encourage each other to give each other strengths which most of them didn’t even know they possessed. With the help of Solaris guiding the team they begin their journey to gather the crystals and save the galaxies.
I can honestly tell you that I finished this book in a day. Solaris Seethes was an easy read with full of entertainment that kept me wanting more. With a variety of personalities in the book there was little of something for everyone. I felt like this book had just enough comic relief, most of that coming from Solaris, to keep the book from being all action. Just within the first book you can tell how each character is struggling with some inner conflict and how in the future they will all help each other.
In my opinion McNulty did a great job with each character. Solaris was done very well and made you believe she was actually a character of the book instead of just a space ship. Rynah was rough around the edges where I’m anxious to see how her path will help her deal with all that has troubled her in the past. Each of the heroes is true to their description and makes you want them to succeed and to learn from each other. I feel like every part of the book had a purpose and there was nothing written that was deemed unnecessary or filler space. The story was originally and very well executed and makes the reader wanting more.
I give Solaris Seether: Solaris Saga Book 1 by Janet McNulty 4 out of 4 stars. The story and the characters were really well developed and done in a way that kept the reader entertained the whole time. I am looking forward to reading the rest of the saga to continue the journey of these unlikely heroes and I know that I will continue with this saga until the end. I hope you all enjoy the book as much as I have.
