Mary Grace lives a happy life in Kansas with her loving family, including her younger brother, Donny, who has Down syndrome. Their close-knit family bonds ground Mary Grace's world. So when her parents announced a two-year missionary trip to Africa, leaving the kids with their grandparents in California, Mary Grace's world was upended. At first, she resists the move, anxious to leave everything familiar behind. But her devotion to Donny compels her to summon her courage and embrace this new chapter. Still, Mary Grace has no idea what adventures are in store for her in California, far from her Kansas home. Will she enjoy it there? Get a copy of Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventures by Catherine Anna Pepe to find out.

Catherine A. Pepe's heartwarming book, Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventures, beautifully captures the powerful bond between siblings Donny and Mary Grace. Their relationship leaps off the page, enveloping readers in their infectious love and loyalty to one another. Family bonds are also at the forefront of this poignant story. I love that the adults in Donny and Mary Grace's world shower them with unconditional love and acceptance. Their attentive care helps both children feel secure and valued, despite the challenges Donny faces.

Many children will relate to themes of friendship and belonging. Donny and Mary Grace discover their friendships can endure even when life takes them far from home. The story reminds us that true friends stick by our side regardless of distance or other obstacles. Thrusting into the unfamiliar setting of California, Mary Grace slowly starts to spread her wings. She makes unlikely new friends and discovers new passions within herself that she never knew existed. Through her daily escapades and encounters, Mary Grace experiences personal growth, gaining a more mature perspective on the world around her.

I recommend this book to readers with personal experience with Down syndrome, as it provides a realistic yet compassionate portrayal of the unique joys and challenges it can bring. Donny's charming personality and behaviors ring true and authentic. This is a story of the human spirit—of love, family, and perseverance through life's unexpected plot twists. Catherine A. Pepe has crafted a heartstring-tugging, smile-inducing tale for readers of all ages to fall in love with. It was well edited, and there is nothing I disliked about it. Finally, it deserves a rating of 5 out of 5 stars.
