What if there was a way to map out an entire book, start to finish? You have the ideas, you’ve got the expertise, but just no time; that’s why you haven’t written the book already. But what if there was a way that you could sit down, follow a structured set of guidelines, and come out of it with not only a plan for a book, but the content for it as well?

Jacqui Pretty has come up with just that in her how-to piece, Book Blueprint. Structured simplistically, the text guides you step-by-step through the process of drafting your book, not in terms of sheer content, but rather the overarching themes and ideas you want to discuss. As Pretty states, “The question isn’t where or not there’s a book in you, it’s whether it’s the right book for right now.” Everyone has an opinion and there are always experiences to share with others, but for the most effective book, Jacqui Pretty suggests focusing on what you are passionate about, and what is going to be useful for your audience—right now. Relevance is the key to your book’s success.

Writers will find Book Blueprint to be an incredible resource. As an author, I found inspiration in the straightforward guidelines that show you each step in the book-writing process. At the same time, anyone who has ever wanted to write a book will find this text useful as well. The advice offered by Ms. Pretty applies to a variety of book styles—which are discussed as well—and covers nearly every topic one might be interested in. Exercises and worksheets are available throughout the book itself and prompt readers to action. Jacqui Pretty is your personal writing coach, guiding you through the motions of writing a book.

I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. Pretty addresses her audience in a friendly and conversational tone that motivates and encourages readers to find knowledge in themselves and capitalize upon the ability to share that knowledge through the medium of a book. A successful editor, Jacqui shows her methods to be tested and true. The steps presented in each chapter follow a logical progression and her text truly struck me as a map to writing a book, complete with a fill-in-the-blank-like process that guides even the most timid of writers. The text was error-free and structured well according to the information presented. It is hard to find anything I did not like about this book.

Book Blueprint, true to its name, provides readers with detailed instructions on writing your first (or second, third, etc.) book. Let Jacqui Pretty guide you through the drafting, planning, and writing processes with step-by-step instructions, exercises, writing prompts, and lists. She’ll help you find the “right idea,” the “right structure,” and of course the “right content” to create your masterpiece. Increase your “thud” value! Read Book Blueprint today and see for yourself just how easy it is to write a book. As Jacqui Pretty says, “The proof is in the paperback.”
