Review of The In-Between
The In-Between: Life in the Micro by Christian Espinosa is a story of how he learned to live his life in the micro-moments and how he generally learned to appreciate the little things. The author had always been the kind of person to chase the goal and didn't really know how to enjoy the process or the journey. This kind of lifestyle ended up costing him some very important things because he was unable to handle them as he should have. However, on a drive back home with his girlfriend, an accident occurred right before them, and in that moment, his life took a sudden shift. He was able to be in the moment and do what needed to be done right there in his present time and not be so caught up in the future, or rather, the macro goals that would normally be his focus. Being in the moment helped him do the right thing and even helped save lives. From then on, he tells his narrative of the many times that he had missed out on his micro moments, the opportunities that passed him by, and how he has been and is still learning from these experiences. More than anything, the stories emphasize the persistence and commitment that the author displayed, which allowed him to be a better version of himself.
This novel was very relatable to me, and so it struck some tight chords in my heart. It is so easy for people today to run toward the finish line without enjoying the race. The pressure of society and, at other times, the pressure that we place on ourselves to be who we feel we ought to be can hinder us from completely being who we are. That was my greatest takeaway from this novel, and this was a common element in many of the stories that were shared in this novel.
I had great comfort reading this novel, and I don't have anything negative to mention about it. Basically, I don't see how the story could have been told any better than it was. I hope that other readers can also share this opinion of mine once they've read this novel.
This is a simple novel that is also simply worth 5 out of 5 stars and I don't have a reason to give it a lesser rating. I was subtly but also strongly inspired by this novel.
This novel is easily readable for any audience. I think it's a great read for adults because of how it reminds us to not lose sight of the journey and to keep our heads in the game by making deliberate efforts to be in the moment. It is a perfect read for nonfiction and other fiction lovers. There are some elements of romance, but these aren't too significant and simply serve as examples that the author used to establish certain points.
