The Shot Not Heard Around the World by Charlie Damitz

I’m going to be completely honest and say that I did judge this book by its cover, I will also say that this book was so much more than its cover and so much better than I had expected. I couldn’t be more happy about it.

The book is about young Jeremy in the colonies of America. One day when the British decide to launch an attack, Jeremy is tasked with luring a hunting party into his father’s minutemens waiting arms. However, when Jeremy makes eye contact with his target, he finds himself experiencing a connection with this other man and is unable to shoot him. This leads to Jeremy learning that he is not made to be a killer. However, Jeremy is incredibly patriotic and wants to help with the war effort in any way he can so instead of taking enemy lives, he decides to learn all he can about medicine from the town doctor and save his countrymen’s lives instead.

This book or more appropriately, this short story was wonderful. Built into the world of colonized America, it was so riveting to watch the transformative story of young Jeremy, from a boy to a doctor. The characters were well written and described, the depth of each personality deepening as the story unfolded. It kept me glued to my seat and unable to tear myself away. The writing was inviting and easy to read and it held my attention throughout the book. Jeremy’s story made me feel hopeful and inspired, at such a young age, he knew that even if he could not make a kill, he was still valuable and had much to offer, which led him to make wonderful and supportive friends.

Though the book was not written in the typical introduction, incident, and conclusion format we are all used to, it was still, if not more interesting than standard books. Because it felt like we were learning about life and medicine with Jeremy, it felt more personal and relatable. Not to mention, I learned quite a bit about 18th-century medicine, which was fascinating, and in my opinion, books that teach you something are that much more valuable.

I don’t have anything negative to say about the book. I thoroughly enjoyed the characters and story. It was entertaining throughout its entirety and well-paced and for these reasons, my rating is 5 out of 5 stars.

The book contains almost no errors and seems to have been professionally edited. It also contains no profanity and I believe it to be suitable for everyone, regardless of age or religious background.

I highly recommend taking out the 2 hours it takes to read this book because I promise it’s worth it and you will enjoy it.
