Breaking Sandcastles by Kurt Burris is a delightful love story/drama about Marion and Jonathon and their life. The book begins with Marion arising from bed after a nights sleep and beginning her normal morning routine. Her husband, Jonathan, has already arisen and left the house for his morning walk. Marion goes to kitchen window and as she is looking out she sees her husband lying in the sand. As she runs toward him her mind begins to reflect over her life and her mind is flooded with memories, good and bad.
Jonathon is a senior in high school, and at 17 thinks he has his future planned out. He has to take one more class to finish out the curriculum for that year and he chooses the art class. He has no interest in art although his father thinks he can draw well. Marion is 28 years old and the teacher for this class. She is only there to teach for one semester as a substitute. Her real job is at the college as an art professor, but she must wait one semester until the current professor retires. Jonathon spies her across the room and is awestruck, she is beautiful and he is very surprised that she is the teacher. As the days go by Jonathon's talent is revealed as is his attraction to Marion. They spend some time together, getting to know each
other out of school and grow close. Then a misunderstanding between he and Marion alters the course of their lives for a few years.
Jonathon and his family went to Europe for his senior trip and he fell in love. When his parents went home he stayed to continue to paint and learn more about the masters. He stayed with his girlfriend, Belladonna and her father, in France. Belladonna is an aspiring model and actress. She loses herself in drugs and drink and leaves Jonathon to his own devices. Jonathon continues to live with her father, Franchot for a while and sells his art to tourists. It is four years before fate brings them together again.
Through the years there are many things that happen to this couple. There are misunderstandings and life events that tear them apart at times and then bring them back together. They experience heartaches, heartbreaks and many happy
times. As Marion is reliving her life with Jonathon there is also a health crises unfolding. As she is making decisions concerning his health she is remembering other decisions she has made throughout her life and how that has shaped her.
Marion and Jonathon have met many people and many adventures in their life.
They have been able to travel and live between two different countries and been able to do what they love, art. There was also a small part of intrigue in the book because of a crime that was committed and so many did not know the details until the end.
I would give this book a rating of 3 out of 4. I give this book this rating because I would definitely encourage other readers to read this book. The only detriment I found was the length. When I started this book I could barely put it down I was able to read in a short period of time. The book had a great storyline and was easy to follow. The ending was fitting for the book and I felt a sort of closure at the end. I was not left wanting more.
