Raven’s Peak by Lincoln Cole is an exciting supernatural, action-packed thriller. The story is complex with many layers and new twists practically every chapter. I found this book instantly interesting—the vague and brief mentions of the Reverend’s past and the first conversation with Frieda within the first several pages made me want to keep reading to find out his mysterious past and what is currently happening in this world. The character development was very great; just within the first 19 pages, I had come to understand the Reverend and his actions and came to not only like his character but also to feel his emotions along with him.
The prologue starts off introducing the reader to the Reverend in his prison cell, and then follows him on the search for his adopted daughter Abigail and revenge for an attack by demons. I thought the prologue was a little long, as prologues go. However, I thought the writing was very good, especially since Cole was able to put a plot twist in the prologue on page 21! Following this early plot twist, the reader starts to see more about what exactly is going on in this supernatural world: demons. Starting with Chapter One, the story jumps to five months later, and follows Abigail and Haatim’s exciting story as they continue to battle against this evil on Earth.
It was interesting to read this supernatural story about Hunters and demons set in a more modern technological setting and time period with jets, cell phones, and GPS. Cole did a great job combining these two types of worlds to make a believable and interesting story and setting for his story.
It was a little strange to read the ‘After’ chapter after the ‘About the Author’ section, especially since ‘After’ picked up immediately after the end of the ‘Epilogue.’
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this first part of Cole’s World on Fire series! The ending of this book is a cliff-hanger, urging the reader to hurriedly find a copy of the second book of this series to continue following Haatim and Abigail on their quest to fight evil! I eagerly look forward to reading the second installment, and recommend this first book to anyone looking for a good and interesting read! This book is especially great for those who actively seek out science fiction, supernatural, action-packed novels.
Minor Errors:
Missing period prologue pg. 18: He ignored their mixed expressions of awe and hatred and climbed into the waiting car
Extra “ at the end of a paragraph pg. 33: He didn’t really know what he was doing, but honestly, how hard could it be?”
Pg. 52, 62, 80, 108, 146, 154, 174, 184, 202, 204, 216-218 are unnecessarily blank
Missing period ch. 5 pg. 75: He didn’t have a huge apartment, but it wasn’t shabby, either, and it was
definitely expensive
Missing “ pg. 101: “We’ll cross that bridge when we come to it,” Abigail said. “For now,
it’s time to be helpful.
Pg. 124, interlude: group of new characters helping to find Bret in the woods—Tim randomly started being mentioned after the others’ names were listed as “the entire group”—should put Tim’s name on that list too
Missing period, pg. 134: The last bit of driving was down a two lane road weaving up the mountains on a switchback path
Missing period, pg. 188: The demon wasn’t possessing her, it was just suggesting a course of action, but she could tell it was powerful
Missing " pg. 210: “No idea,” she said. “But it smells terrible.
