[Following is a volunteer review of "Involuntary Reroute" by Robert Laney.]
Involuntary Reroute by Robert Laney is an eye-opening memoir that exposes readers to the hidden world of travel airlines' deception. As a regular traveller, this book resonated with me in many ways.
The author’s candid narrative hooked me as he recounted the humble beginnings of his mother-son travel agency training centre, which they established with sheer determination and no financial backing. This sets the stage for the author’s subsequent unveiling of the airline industry’s guarded secrets, including the infamous “AD75” tactic used to fill first-class seats at exorbitant prices for loyal customers while offering discounted rates to travel agency owners. Reading further into the book, the revelations surrounding how travel agency owners exploit these loopholes to enjoy premium travel experiences at a fraction of the real cost, which often leaves frequent flyers trapped in the economy cabin despite paying higher fares, amazed me. The author’s insider knowledge and his willingness to expose these practices shed light on an aspect of the industry that many travellers may be unaware of.
I rate this book five out of five stars, not only for the book’s exposure to the secret of how travel agencies get discounted tickets but also for the valuable business strategies and nuggets the author shared. Right from the mistakes he made while seeking investors for his travel agency to the lessons he learned from the mistakes, the author’s transparency is a character I appreciate a lot. I also appreciate the careful editing of the book, as I did not encounter errors that could have disrupted my reading experience.
I also did not notice any negatives throughout my reading journey. The author’s willingness to share both successes and failures makes the book an informative read from start to finish. I recommend this book to anyone with a passion for entrepreneurship in the travel industry or a curiosity about the inner workings of the airline industry. If you’re a frequent flyer, a business owner, or just someone who appreciates a well-crafted memoir, this book will give you a unique and insightful perspective that will educate you about the travel industry.
