"Surviving the Business of Healthcare" by Barbara Galutia Regis offers a refreshing and insightful look into the rapidly changing world of healthcare. Drawing from her unique perspective as a physician assistant with over 20 years of experience in family practice, Regis delivers a compelling narrative that addresses the challenges patients face in today's healthcare system.

One of the standout features of this book is Regis' emphasis on the importance of having a primary care physician (PCP). She passionately advocates for the role of PCPs in guiding patients through their medical journey, from addressing common health concerns to recommending appropriate specialists. The author highlights that many patients often end up seeing specialists unnecessarily, leading to increased costs and confusion. By prioritizing their relationship with a PCP, patients can potentially save money and receive more coordinated care.

Regis also provides practical advice on a range of topics, including how to choose a PCP, health insurance policies, medication management, and the importance of owning catastrophic health insurance. Her tips are not only informative but also empowering, equipping readers with the knowledge and tools they need to make informed healthcare decisions for themselves and their families. Additionally, she shares personal anecdotes from her childhood, shedding light on the profound impact of a doctor's calling and the challenges posed by the influence of for-profit insurance on quality of care.

Another commendable aspect of the book is Regis' exploration of various healthcare career options. By offering insights into different roles within the healthcare industry, she encourages readers to consider alternative paths and fosters a greater appreciation for the diverse professionals who contribute to patient care.

In conclusion, "Surviving the Business of Healthcare" is a must-read for anyone navigating the complexities of the modern healthcare system. This book is impeccably edited and offers valuable information. I found nothing to dislike about this book, so I rate it 5 out of 5. Regis' genuine concern for the direction of healthcare today is evident throughout the book, and her goal to initiate constructive conversations is commendable. By challenging readers to rethink their approach to health and empowering them with valuable information, Regis makes a compelling case for why knowledge is indeed power in the realm of healthcare.

Hi, Anu. I agree that Barbara Galutia Regis wrote a great book to help people navigate through the complexities of health care. It is good advice to find a primary care provider and catastrophic health insurance. I liked how she provided anecdotes about her father's way of caring for patients when he was a community-based doctor. This book is a reliable source of information. Great review! :techie-studyinggray:

Thank you for your insightful review. There are aspects of this book that I'm not sure would apply within England where we have the NHS. I agree with the points of primary care physicians being important, but that is almost a natural thing to be registered with a practice here. The aspects of the roles within healthcare could still be of use across the globe though.

I read this book and found it informative. Sadly, it also highlights the fact that, although science claims to have advanced, obtaining genuine and affordable health care remains a major challenge. Thank you for your detailed review.
