Review of Bluewater Walkabout
Bluewater Walkabout: Into Africa beautifully captures the essence of seizing life's opportunities, echoing the timeless wisdom of Mark Twain: "Twenty years from now, you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did do. Explore. Dream. Discover." Tina Dreffin's memoir is a testament to the transformative power of exploration and resilience in the face of adversity.
Right from the start, Dreffin's story grabs you with its honesty and courage as she shares her journey from trauma to adventure and healing. Her openness about her experiences of sexual assault is both brave and empowering, shedding light on a difficult topic while offering hope to survivors.
What sets the book apart is the author's ability to transport you into her adventures across Africa. Through her words, you can almost feel the wind on your face as you join her family, including her husband, sons, and sons’ friends, aboard the yacht Scud on their South Pacific Expedition. She paints a vivid picture of the landscapes, encounters, and emotions they experience along the way. The author's relationship with her husband, Peter, adds another layer of depth to the story, showing how love can help us grow and heal. His support and encouragement are a constant source of strength for her as she embraces her adventurous side.
Despite its professional editing and beautiful illustrations, the book has its flaws. It includes occasional vulgar language and some overwhelming flashbacks. It made reading tiring and also made me want to always skip to the adventure part. Because of that, I will rate it four out of five stars. Besides those reasons, the book is a captivating read that stays with you long after you finish it.
Bluewater Walkabout: Into Africa is a powerful memoir that celebrates the resilience of the human spirit and the joy of discovery. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a story of courage, hope, and redemption. Tina Dreffin's journey will inspire you to seize life's adventures and make the most of every opportunity.
