How would you feel after hearing about getting separated from your parents for a long time? This book narrates the story of Donny and Mary Grace and their adventures in California.

Donny was an enthusiastic child diagnosed with Down syndrome. So, he had all the love he could get for the moments he had left. Donny’s sister, Mary Grace, was clever and always curious. They all lived together as a happy family in Wichita. However, there is sadness in the air when the kids learn of being separated from their parents for a while. Due to the nature of their jobs, Mr. and Mrs. Miller were to move to Africa. So they decided their children would stay at their grandparents’ place in California for that period. After several disagreements, the kids moved along with the plan. How were they able to cope in this new environment? Grab this book to learn more about their adventures in California.

The book contains seventeen chapters and a table of contents for quick navigation. It made little use of images. The book, although fictitious, is based on real-life events. The book taught some morals about the consequences of bullying and the application of problem-solving skills. I felt Mary Grace’s pain after hearing about her parents’ planned departure. I was impressed with her idea of modifying the bullying case so that all parties learn from their mistakes. I enjoyed reading about the Grandma Gang and the story behind their solved mystery.

There was no issue I had with it. The book was brief, and the language used was not complex. It was nice to know that some parts of the book were based on actual events. I rate it 5 out of 5 stars. There were no errors, evidence of its exceptional editing. My favorite character is Donny because he keeps carrying positive energy around him. His syndrome made me feel for those with similar conditions. It appears there are more installments in the series that readers would love to try out.

Donny and Mary Grace’s California Adventures by Catherine Anna Pepe is for kids and adults. All age groups would grab a lesson from it after reading. I found some profanities while reading.
