Escape (Tip of the Spear Book 1) by Belle Ami

This romantic spy thriller begins with Cyrus, explaining his position in Iran, and how he became the Deputy Director Jalal of Oghab 2's trusted assistant. Then, we are introduced to Layla and her Saudi boyfriend planning to visit Dubai to present Layla to Zamir’s parents. And while trying to visit Zamir in his hotel room she is kidnapped alongside him. They are taken to an Iranian prison where they’re separated. The Saudi boy gets ransomed to fund Iran’s nuclear ambitions but Layla is kept in the prison. Cyrus is then tasked with rescuing and extracting her from Iran. Options for escape run out when the Jalal learns her father is a renown nuclear physicist.

The thriller side of the book makes this story fast paced with lots of twist and turns. And I liked that while the main part of this story features Cyrus and Layla’s point of view, it also includes short chapters with her father and of Deputy Director Jalal. I think hearing the worry and fear with the father’s point of view, as well as Jalal’s frustration, and anger the longer it takes to catch these two makes the odds against them feel all the greater.

Cyrus’s character had a strong sense of honor. We went out of his way to insure Layla was safe, even from himself. Whereas Layla’s strength quietly shines through as puts her life in his hands. The attraction grows between Cyrus and Layla, and they grow closer as they struggle across the country. When they finally give in to what they both feel, It made me wonder if they had any hope of a true relationship if they are able to make their escape. Or if it was just the dangerous situations they kept find themselves in keeping them together.

The technology Cyrus uses to receive instructions from Israel is kept fairly realistic. I could see some variety of it being used in real life. And while I’m unfamiliar with the politics and geography of these overseas countries the descriptions also sound credible. I felt both meshed well within the story without having to wonder where or what they may be speaking of. I find it a big plus when I can continue through without having to backtrack to understand details.

I would rate this book with a 4 out of 4 stars. This romance was well written and edited, there were no spelling or grammar issues that I noticed. I really enjoyed this read and look forward to seeing what the author comes up with next. I can only hope the author continues this series and the next book is as good as the first. I would recommend this only to a mature audience as some of those scenes got pretty graphic.

Nice review. But maybe I won't read the book, I'm not a fan of graphic scenes.
