Life Before is an intense story of two women separated by space and time. The book, a historical novel is written and self published by K.L.Romo. The author is interested on women issues as seen in her passionate writing of her book.
One of the main characters, Elaine Grace Dearborn found she wants to resume her passion in writing which she set parked in a while to raise a family after she got married eighteen years ago. As soon as she started writing she found herself experiencing her previous life as Eliza Genevieve Darling, a reformed prostitute in early 20th century Dallas. Eliza is fighting to put an end to Dallas horrible sex trade involving young girls. Though she know it will never be easy, her powerful determination helped as many girls have the chance to leave "the life". Elaine's trip back to her previous life through her computer enable her to understand her bizarre connection to Eliza as well as the beginning of her new book.
Life Before revolved around the life of Elaine and Eliza separately; and their significant role in the life of many young innocent girls who were forced into prostitution. It made cry at the crime and carnage committed thinking that the same crimes still lurked in this modern civilization hidden from the light of day. The story is a heavy read and it is calling for action as it clamor for justice specially for young less privileged women in the society. What makes it more desperate is the citizens lack of concern if not totally forgotten these people. But Eliza is not easy to give in. Her tale as young girl with an indifferent mother contributed to her end up in one of the houses in Emma Street. With the help of Ms. Dixie the mistress of the center for reformed prostitute she knew she can change the history. She is vowed to free other girls like her by giving them the chance to gain education, hone their gifts and talents and an alternative livelihood to support their families.
I was deeply captivated by the story that I could not put it down and finished it overnight. The story is neatly written and the plot is easy to follow and understand despite of jumping from one date to another. I don't remember encounter grammatical or typographical errors as I flipped the pages. The characters are significantly in place giving their vital part in the story as a whole. There are explicit but substantial scenes in the story that need guidance for younger audiences. Otherwise this is generally for mature readers.
I will rate Life Before 4 out of 4 stars. The heartbreaking drama of prostitution involving girls illustrating grotesque reality is the author's audacity to engage the public in this true to life happening in the society. The book is relatable as well as educative. I will recommend this book to those interested in social issues and those who are advocating for less privileged people. An author's masterpiece.
