I rated the book, “Will You Talk to Me? A Story about the Hummingbird and His wisdom” By: Margie Carstens, 5 out of 5 stars. As a mother to five young children, I am always interested in finding books that tell a beautiful story, while also sharing an important message. Margie Carstens does a wonderful job achieving this in her story. The story begins with a beautiful illustration and introduction to a little girl that is in awe of the ocean right outside of her window. Margie paints the picture by describing what the little girl sees on top of the water (sailboats, jet skis, waves) as well as what the little girl knows is under the surface (dolphins, sea lions, whales). She then draws the attention of the reader to something much smaller, right outside the window. Hummingbirds are such fascinating creatures and clearly captured this little girl’s curiosity. The words Margie used to describe this little creature were perfectly characteristic of a hummingbird: “tiny creature zipping about,” “mesmerizing, so beautiful and colorful,” and “regal.” In the off chance a child has not seen a hummingbird, the words describe exactly what you would see. The reader quickly sees the hummingbird tested and how the situation resolves, which leads to self-exploration by this little girl. Margie does a wonderful job of connecting the thoughts and feelings of this little girl and the wisdom imparted by the hummingbird. This provides a wonderful opportunity to discuss important topics with children including self-confidence, comparing yourself to others, and how special we all are in our own way. I found the writing style and editing to be flawless. There is nothing that I would add or change to this book. The book is eloquently written and includes beautiful illustrations that will keep the attention of children. I found it to be an enjoyable read as a parent and a wonderful introduction to especially important conversations for children. I highly recommend this book and look forward to sharing it with my children.
