Solaris Seethes by Janet McNulty is the first book of the 4 book futuristic series called Solaris Saga. The easy to read story begins on the planet Lanyr where the main character Rynah sets off to work one day with her head in the clouds twisting the new ring on finger. She enjoys her work and is happy to begin what the believes will just be another normal day at work. When the ground beneath her feet begins to quiver, she's surprised and confused. At the same time, she realizes that the lab is being overtaken, she's startled to find her fiancé Klanor behind the vicious attack. He's there to steal the crystal that keeps their planet alive. The crystal, 1 of 6 of their kind, stabilizes the planet's magnetic field and needed to stay in place or the planet would fall to pieces… like it was doing at that very moment.
Having made it through a horrendous firefight deep underground where the crystal had once lived, Rynah finds herself running towards her late grandfather's hanger, hoping that he has a ship hidden for her to escape with. What she finds more than surprises her and she takes off from the planet with only seconds to spare. The ship's name is Solaris, but it's more than just a name… Solaris IS the ship, an artificial intelligence that runs all of the ship's systems and communicates with the crew telepathically, although Rynah is the only one at the moment.
Once the ship is hidden in the Chestur Nebula, Rynah relaxes a bit while Solaris tells her about the legends her grandfather had researched and believed to be true. That there are 6 crystals each on their own planet, but if ever brought together, could be used to channel a most deadly weapon that could destroy their Universe and more! Rynah is just as skeptical now as she was when her grandfather first told her of his beliefs… but now it seemed to be coming true so she was starting to come around. Solaris recites part of the legend and Rynah gives in agreeing to transport four unsuspecting people from a more primitive Terra Sector. Each having different strengths, they also come from different points in time. When they all arrive, not even sure what where or how they arrived there, they all form an unusual crew starting in an adventure they'll never forget.
Reading through Solaris Seethes, McNulty kept me intrigued at every turn of the page. The vividly detailed scene as Rynah fought her way to try to save the crystal, then later to save herself was easily pictured in my head.
As the group landed on each new planet, I found myself yelling at the them in my head telling them to be wary of danger only to find the danger nothing like I would ever have imagined. Each new challenge the pack faced was cleverly detailed asking the reader to open their mind just that little bit wider.
My favourite scene is when Rynah is lifting off from Lanyr in Solaris for the first time:
“The purple atmosphere gave way to the inky darkness of space as the ship exited the upper stratosphere.”
I only wish the author spent a bit more time explaining what the planet is like… this teasing little tidbit only wets the palate leaving me wanting more.
I rate Solaris Seethes by Janet McNulty 4 out of 4. The creative imagery kept me engaged and eagerly looking for more. If you like action packed stories about advanced civilizations, then this is the story for you.
I very much look forward to reading book 2 in the Solaris Saga series, Solaris Seeks to continue Rynah’s story.
