Review of WTF! The Chase
Marc Longcor's WTF! The Chase not only throws caution to the airlock but also nullifies the narrative. It is a sci-fi comedy that blasts the readers into a wormhole full of cultural references, historical games, and potty jokes good enough to power even the smallest spaceship.
The story is more about advice than a map. We get to know a diverse cast of characters: the sarcastic historian named Stone, the government agent with a kilt fetish (of course it's Agent MacKinnon), and the pair of odd civilians: Kate, the tech whiz, and Stacy, who loves mysterious theories. They become the epitome of a misadventure as they travel time and chase a disobedient agent on a mission that has as much clarity as a mud puddle on Mars.
The real heroes of the movie are the cast. It’s the contrast between the cynical, biting sarcasm of Stone and MacKinnon's nonchalant theatricality that is truly a match made in heaven. Frost, the most unstable and cocaine-dependent alien specimen, could be the weirdest and sweetest creature besides the Andromeda Galaxy. The supporting roles, from Viking Wolfmen to carnivorous plants (I am not kidding!), contribute to this crazy pandemonium. The comic aspect of the story is a two-way lightsaber. The role of fans of the absurd, pop culture-riddled afterlife will be to raise gales of laughter. For those into the dry or sarcastic side of humor, it might become hard to step away from a meme machine.
"WTF! The Chase" breaks the mold belonging to a particular genre. It is sci-fi and, at the same time, historical fiction with added fantasy, seasoned with some civic plot. Some can find this genre-blurring directionless, but if you are ready to be surprised, then this is an excitingly varied banquet. The book editing was brilliant, and I have nothing to criticize about.
The whole "WTF! The Chase," the plot of which isn't for people with faint nerves or those who easily get offended, is an insane journey on a timeline platform, given pulp in the form of crude humor and an outlandish plot. But then, if you're looking for a book that will give you true laughter that makes all your worries go away, a sense of "What the...?" that will leave you short of breath but eventually turn into the best fun you've had all day, I say get ready for the best ride ever. My rating for this book will be 5 out of 5 stars. Forget ordered chronology and proper syntax, and jump into this humorous, illogical escapade across time and space.
